We're just back from our first ever family holiday, abroad, to Menorca, as it went so well, we've already turn to next years trip.

As I spent last week thinking I was in France or French, a classic highlight amongst many:-

Me puede traer la cuenta, s'il vous plait.

We've decided to go to France, but where?

All being well, a couple of weeks earlier, I'll be spending a week riding across The Pyrenees from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
So fairly doubtful I'll be riding anywhere.

if you like recent history,it's the north

if you like chateaux's,then it's the middle

if you like the sun and beaches,it's the south

i live in auch,an hour west of toulouse,i can rule that out for you

Myself and Wifey have been to Carcassonne, and loved it and the area.
But now have to be mindful of the kids.
Although they were quite happy going around the major towns, ports etc, but naturally the beach et al is their default setting.

Are you camping? Family holidays on French campsites are brilliant. We camped every year in various parts of France from when our kids were 2 and 3 until 12 and 13. Then they rebelled, and couldn't take the driving anymore.
You've got so many different holiday types available if you avoid the flat expanses of the North East. Surfing, white water rivers, or mountain biking (for a change from the road). It's impossible to recommend one thing over another without knowing what you as a family enjoy, but France is brilliant.

Me, wifey and little F's, together with the BHA Houndean Rise Massive, went down to the west coast in Aug, south of Nantes. Lovely. All our kids are getting older (ages 9-13) though so it was easier for the adults to relax, eat, drink and be merry. How old are the kids and what type of holiday do you like?

Yeah kind of the problem we are having now, I think we want a bit of everything.
We're definitely not camping. (old wounds )

We love being out and about, either regular sightseeing Châteaux etc, or bikes/boats/adventure.

But as I said, the kiddie winks, could just as easily beach/pool/play park it, what with them being 7 and 5.

If you choose anywhere within reasonable driving distance of Futuroscope and/or Le Grand Parc Puy Du Fou, visit them !, I promise you you won't be disappointed.

We went to both when we stayed in Olonne sur mer, in the Vendée region.

Good point Futuroscope is brilliant, went the first year it opened and once again around 5 years ago.

Parc Asterix is well worth a visit as well, if near Senlis

Well...the Ardeche is beautiful, and has fantastic beaches by the river. It's safe to swim in and you can canoe the gorge, which is a really good day out (with some white water rapid bits - but not mad, like, say New Zealand). There are also loads of rocks which line the river bank and are safe to 'tombstone' off.
It's still not very busy, and is a bit off the beaten track...a bit like the Dordogne used to be before it got full.
We've returned twice. The kids love it, can't recommend it highly enough.

Always found the Vendee and the coast south of there marvellous. The weather is as good as the south of France as well but easier to reach by car. With a young family a campsite within walking distance of the sea was good fun.

There is also a very good water park in the Vendee area and shed loads of "moules and frites"
