Fifa senior vice-president Julio Grondona also delivered a stinging riposte to the English FA. "We always have attacks from England which are mostly lies with the support of journalism which is more busy lying than telling the truth," said the Argentine. "This upsets and disturbs the Fifa family".

In other words, a free press asking awkward questions is upsetting and disturbing. And its as a result of those questions that various FIFA delegates have been suspended on corruption charges - if those questions arn't asked, then these self-serving, greed-driven suits get to carry on with their snouts buried deep in the trough, because one thing has become very clear - nobody within FIFA will ever blow the whistle until their own cover has been blown.

FIFA need to get their heads round the fact that they do not OWN World Football - they are supposed to be there to govern it and look after the best interests of the game as a whole. Too many of them have been on a comfortable gravy train for too long now, they think they are untouchable and unaccountable to anyone, and the remarks by the likes of Grondona just go to reinforce how shady and out of touch so many of those FIFA bigwigs are.

f*** 'em. They can't kick us out just for rocking the boat so the FA should make a point of rocking it at every opportunity. They hate us anyway, the FA should try to bring down this corrupt organisation once and for all.

Unfortunately, not enough other associations care - look at the journos asking questions at the weekend, almost all British.

We'd have been much better of bribing our way to the 2018 World Cup, seems like the way to get what you want these days

The mistake the the FA have made is that they didn't provide conclusive proof of corruption. They went in with circumstantial evidence which was NEVER going to be enough. Fine, make the accusations if you can prove it, otherwise keep your gob shut

The problem is that the FA's moral crusade has come off the back of a losing World Cup bid. However truthful the accusations, the rest of the FIFA World percieves us as being sore losers.

FIFA needs sorting out, but I honestly cannot see it happening until the FA convince two major nations, aside from England, Scotland and *ahem* Liberia, to make a stand.

Exactly, Blatter has clearly had a word with some of his more corrupt mates with plenty to hide and told them 'Stick with me, and it will all stay in the vaults. And give the English a bit of a kicking while you're up there, remember the Malvinas'.

Even Maradona thought Grondona was corrupt, and it must be easier in Argentina where you can shoot journalists. Then again, you think about Piers Morgan...

Great post - one of the surefire ways of detecting someone with something grubby to hide is the way they blame the media for raising inconvenient questions.

FIFA is a joke with anyone who really cares about football and I wouldn't lose a moment's sleep if we withdrew from it. But the English FA, while not corrupt as far as I know, offers no vision or leadership either.

We should ahve bribed our way to the 2018 World Cup, and then after hosting it, explained to the world that we got it with bribes, because that's the way FIFA works. Get your world cup, then fight for change, not the other way around.
Anyway, we didn't do that - death to FIFA

The FA is little better than FIFA itself.

Prior to the WC vote, England originally were scheduled to play Thailand in just over a week, this was an attempt to win a vot for the 2018 bid. Similarly the FA were making donations to local associations in Africa, Asia etc.

Unfortunately our attempts to incentivise delegates weren't as big as Russia's, but let's not take the moral high ground as it stinks of hypocrisy.
