Can anyone tell Me where was the famous chicken run situated at the Goldstone.

I always wondered if the Goldstone ever became all seater due to the Taylor Report what we would do with the east terrace, perhaps some kind of wonky looking seated stand like The Dell used to have?

The chicken run was a fenced off area at the bottom of the east terrace,after it was removed the whole east terrace became known as the chicken run.ACCORDING TO UNCLE CYRIL FRONT MIDDLE

i think when you score you throw your hat in the air! Always a couple of chancers hoping to pick up a hat

That was true. I went as a kid in the fifties with my Grandfather who was a Palace fan, to watch the Albion play the Palace and when we scored I grabbed his hat and threw it in the air, he never got it back. He never ever let me forget it.

But there is an adult bloke without a hat, with a WOMAN standing next to him.

The photo was obviously taken in the era when GAYS recognised each other by secretly wearing HATS.

My Dad always took us to stand on the East Terrace. I never actually asked why we stood there specifically but I'm guessing it was cost, as he was paying for three. I'm not exactly sure when I moved over to the North Stand but it must have been when I started going on my own.

I'm a bit young to remember the Goldstone in too much detail, but what was the general demographic of the east stand? (if north were the ruffians, south was the family, west were the moaners and expensive seats...)

Total guess North Stand 5000 ?

against Blackpool once, I wouldn't be surprised if there were in excess of 17,000 in there, I was in the ground at about 1.20pm and only just managed to get my regular spot at the front, I was almost caught out as the gates usually didn't open till 1.30, but at 1pm there was already a crowd forming!

Started my regular Albion supporting career in the East Terrace, so happy memories from me (I seem to remember the decision to move the away fans to the East Terrace Centre and South did not go down too well with the regulars who stood in those areas). However, the folks were always a bit concerned about me going on the terraces on my own, so they used to buy me South Stand tickets, and then bought me a South Stand season ticket for my birthday in 1988, and I then had four happy years in there. I didn't graduate to the North Stand until I stopped being a STH in 1992, but managed to go in all areas of the ground apart from the North East corner and that funny bit of terracing between the North and West Stands. Best view was the East Terrace North, for the League Cup game vs Manchester United, where a certain Mr Beckham made his debut. One of the finest views from any football ground in my view.

The chicken run was the area from the goal line tojust outside the penalty area of the East Terrace if we defended the North goal. Used to always be there by about 1.30 for a 3.00pm kickoff having finished my butchers delivery round by 12.30 to get the 1.oclock train to Hove. The night we beat Watford to gain our first ever promotion I was sat around the cinder track just inside the wall from about 3.00pm for a 7.30 kick off. The record attendance is shown for a match on Boxing Day home to Fulham but I have always maintained that on that night there were many more people watching as the ground was packed and the cinder track was full of children sitting watching the game.
