To make matters worse I heard from the top that actually Lewes DC have been quite helpful since Falmer go-ahead granted, whilst B&H City haven't helped a lot!
:amex:

Surely it's a case of having to, the stadium is almost built, they might as well work with us to make it work as well as it can, for everyone, no sense in being awkward about it now.

At the risk of making myself unpopular, in his defence he represents many constituents who were rabidly anti-Falmer along with the local council. In terms of his political health, anything other then an anti- Falmer approach may have been political suicide for him, and I don't suppose he was prepared to take that risk for BHA.
Particularly as there is a long established anti Brighton vibe within some quarters in Lewes. Also when we finally got a yes decision I remember he had prepared those people against the stadium and encouraged them not to try and take it any further.
I am by no means an authority in that period and people may well have more knowledge about his role which may not be so favourable.
What he never was, was a Bellotti or an Archer or even the horrible hag from LDC whose name I have forgotten. De Vicchi?

I tend to agree, I don't agree with many of his views, but this is a democracy and we should always have respect for other people views. He is well thought of in Liberal circles, and most people accept his credentials. The fact that he opposed what we wanted, shouldn't in itself attract all this unnecessary negativity. I will say though that he isn't the greatest communicator in the world, and came across as a bit of a dickhead on many occasions :)

He is an MP for the whole constituency and not just a small village.

His mistake was to back the small village, without understanding the strength of pro-stadium and pro-Albion sentiment across the rest of his patch.

a load of Planners who advise them who are toffs and like Opera (so will approve a HIDEOUS development at Glyndebourne)
Au contraire ... Glyndebourne is one of the great iconic European buildings of the late 20th century. A masterpiece of modern architecture that has been welcomed by the locals.

The tragedy of the stadium saga was the small-mindedness of a tiny number of ignorant individuals in Falmer, who want to live out a fantasy that their little corner of suburban Brighton is, in fact, a rural idyll. It ain't.

He's not an evil person. He put up a decent fight for something he, for whatever reason, felt he had to. We won, end of story really.

He's an arrogant, ignorant ****, as are all the anti-stadium members of LDC. End of story. Apparently we're supposed to be 'building bridges' with them. Well I tried building bridges but planning permission was refused ...

We are going to have to agree to disagree on that one, Lord B. I think that new big grey box at Glyndebourne is FAR more intrusive on the landscape than Falmer; but if my memory is right it went through planning permission almost on the nod. Wonder why???

Oh and a rare lapse there in using that great overused cliche word of the decade; "iconic"

......unless you were being ironic........

I thought it was one of the rare correct uses of "iconic".

You're defining the whole building in terms of just one feature. Seen from across open countryside from over where I live, the whole building looks superb in its setting. The largest post-WW2 brick (as opposed to brick-clad) building in Europe, if I remember correctly.

Just far enough away from LDC
I do hold major dislike for him due to the total and utter fabrications he used to make his case. Anyone remember the case for sheepcote valley he presented AFTER it had been given and accepted as evidence as unworkable? or the plans for a hotel at Falmer that never was?

Object by all means, oppose? no problem. Use lies and deceit and ignoring facts to be replaced by supposition and conjecture? sorry that's not the role of an elected representative.

I'll join you in this minority. I don't harbour much ill feeling for him really.

All things considered, it's turned out rather fine.

I think that's the nub. It wasn't so much that he used every legitimate method to oppose us it was that he lied and lied and lied and lied. And when he wasn't lying he was wildly exagerrating. ****. Total ****.

What was wholly unacceptable is the way he attempted to give the impression that an Albion director had been involved in some shady dealings. His claim - put in a careful litigation-avoiding way of course - was aimed at John Prescott but others got hit by the PR manure. Baker knew that there was nothing whatsoever in it but was happy to leave a faint smell of corruption lingering over the stadium. Very, very nasty.

Oooooh! you are right. I'd forgotten that. This must be added to the charge sheet.

Wasn't there some question he asked in Parliament about what hospitality Prescott had received at the club? To which the answer was something like a glass of water and 1 Hollands Meat and Potato Pie?

he may have been opposed to Falmer to support his constituents ( as a good MP should), but at least he has got the bo****s to stand up against the government and its "services" to try and get the truth published about an innocent scientist and his "untimely" suicide. Respect to him
