I've just come into some money and am wondering if anybody has any? Have you won anything? How many do you have?

FRUIT OF THE BLOOM
There have been rather a lot of premium bond threads lately !....

My advice is if you can afford them....invest

My girlfriend swears by them but they recently adjusted the prizes downwards so you get £25 instead of £50 as the lowest prize. At worst you will keep your capital and at best you will win a million. With interest rates as low as they are now you probably aren't taking too much of a risk but your chances of winning are reduced.

Depends on how much you put in.
My mum has 30 grand in there and she gets about 2-5% back every year. And she's always in with a chance of getting the jackpot one day.

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
I used to spend £ 10 a week on the lottery.
Although I got 5 numbers up once, the amount I won didn't cover the ticket money I'd previously spent on lottery tickets.
A while ago, I gave up the lottery, and I now buy £ 100 worth of Premium Bonds every 10 weeks.
I've only won £ 25, but so far I've got £ 2,000 worth of bonds, and the chance to win a million.

As an Independent Financial Adviser we were actively recommending them to higher rate tax-payers until a couple of year's ago. Quite attractive to 40% or 50% tax-payers as of course the prizes are tax-free.

However, with the credit crunch and the bank bailouts, government/treasury saving plans have had to be a little less attractive. The prize pool for premium bonds has diminished rapidly & I wouldn't advise most people to consider them now.

There is a useful tool to see if you have average luck what your chances of winning & how much over different periods.

Premium Bonds: Are they worth it?...

For instance if you invest the maximum £30,000 and have average luck, then you could expect to win £400.00 over a year.

Not bad, but you can more than double that with many bank/buiilding society accounts.

And then of course if you have average luck and win £400.00 after inflation is taken into consideration - you have actually lost about £1,000!!!

If your going to put the money away and forget about it, you might as well stick it in a stocks and shares isa or Unit trust. I made just under 40 percent return on my investments last year just in a UK tracker fund, no intial charges either. Booommm.

Premium bonds seems like a waste of time to me, plus if you don't make a return your intial capital will be worth less due to inflation anyway.

no brainer to buy some really, especially if you like to have a flutter. it shouldnt be a main pot of savings because you lose on inflation over time, but each £1 is basically a lottery ticket without paying for it.
