The problem is that if you lack behind in most cases, not all granted, it is very difficult to make up those lost points. I have lost count of the number of times we have lost stupid game in August/Sepetember and come the end of the season it had been that had we won that game we would have been promoted/ not relegated /or got in the play offs.

We have four points from three games, including two very difficult away games. Hardly, a disastrous start, is it?

I hope I remember to start a thread of this title on the last day of the season.

Because the season will actually be over then.

But he's had all summer to bring in a striker and a left winger, wehat makes you think he's going to get one in the next few days?

Gerbil - he may not sign a striker. He's been trying all Summer within the parameter of: budget; competition from other clubs; players preferences (believe it or not, not all players consider Brighton to be their best choice) and the Premiership squad shake-out. But it won't be for the lack of trying or because he was so stupid he didn't realise we needed another striker.

The points WW makes seem flawed however:

- No wide man: genius observation. Why hasn't anyone else spotted this. If only Gus would try and sign someone like LuaLua.
- No pace: simply wrong.
- No 20 goal striker: see above.

- And the most alarming thing of all - No strength in depth: wrong. We had our #1 keeper injured; our #1 CB out; our #1 midfielder out; possibly the player of the year at the end of last season injured. Four key players all replaced with players of the right quality.

If WW is complaining that we don't have a quality third team....then good point well made.

We all know we need a winger and a striker and maybe another midfielder. We know this because there are 300 threads about it on NSC and we know it because Gus keeps saying it too. They may or may not turn up by the end of August, or in January. But we sure do know that Gus and TB are aware of it and within the constraints that we have they are doing there best to secure the right players.

What we also know is that we just don't need more threads like this!

I am not saying that it is but the fact remains that come May we may well be saying about the 2 points dropped at home to Rochdale and the possible dropped point yesterday which would have deprived Wednesday of 2 points.

I fancied you getting something up there, looks like the brand spanking new stadium will be hosting football from the 3rd tier of British football.

I suppose it could be argued that we're one minute and one goal away from maximum points. Just doesn't feel like it somehow.

I'm not particularly arguing that. I think if refereeing decisions had gone on our way things may have been different although that is not guaranteed. We do lack punch up front, but considering we have been without Sparrow and Greer for two of our three league games (I am not debating the sendings off and we have to sort out our discipline) then it is not a bad start. I would probably have taken a draw at Swindon, win against Rochdale and defeat to Wednesday from the first three games but having won at Swindon it is disappointing.

love it, we were missing 4 of the spine of the team through suspension/injury. Take 4 key players out of any team in this league and they will have a weak bench as well. You cannot have a huge squad of quality players in this league. The lack of goals from the bench was a worry but Poyet has said on numerous occasions in the last few weeks that he is working on it.

I disagree with this, yes we have 4 players out or whatever but having a squad of 15 decent players (so you say) doesn't show strength in depth at all.

OK LETs go do a slade or adams shall we...bless em both..as both did good jobs at various stages..but the money those two wasted during the last 2 seasons is a f*cking joke...Gus wants the right players and is prepared to wait for them to become available..he has said all along that they may not be available until the last minute...Neither Tony Bloom or Gus has mislead us...they have both said that there is a sizeable budget but will not be wasting it...bit of patience fellas business will be done

In recent years we have signed: Nathan Elder, Alex Revell, Nicky Forster, Glen Murray, Jonny Dixon, Craig Davies, Liam Dickinson, Ashley Barnes, Chris Holroyd and Lloyd Owusu. I think there are a few mistakes among those, it's better to keep the money than buy rubbish.

Tony Bloom is great. He's funded a brilliant stadium. But he's also said he wants promotion. If he's going to get that, he has to spend, and Gus needs to find the players - resorting to random trialists at this late stage seems a little desperate to be honest.

If we don't sign the players then we're not going up - it's as simple as that. So it's all down to them to stop this season being nothing but an attractive to watch anti-climax.

Right....and Gus has been saying all of this for WEEKS now, so we return to the pertinent question - What the f**k is your point?

There's a chance we won't go up. That being the case will you fill your allocation at Falmer next season?

Regarding transfers. As, I mentioned in one of (the many) threads on this subject. As the transfer deadline approaches, deals will be made with player's agents. It's like playing a game of poker. Something TB is very good at.

Let's bounce this thread again on 1 September.

No your reply is flawed.

Yes our first 11 is quailty on paper but lacks one or two players to challenge the top 2.How often in a 46 game season and cup matches do your best 11 start? Not to often due to injuries/suspensions etc.The lack of depth to our squad is shocking and when i heard it out read out on the radio i feared the worse. Not one player on there who could turn a match.
As for pace, yes do do lack pace. Both Murray and Barnes are slow.Nav,Kish,Dicker and Sparrow are not exactly quick.
We won't finish anywhere near a relegation fight so WW has got that wrong totally but unless we can cope with a few players out then finishing in the top6 is probably a no no.
Huddersfield,Charlton,Wednesday,Saints,Posh all have a strength in depth. All those teams have at least 3 decent strkers on there books if not more.
I believe we are still in the process in building the team and therefore will miss out this year.

I was at Hillsborough yesterday and while WW's comment about finding ourselves in a relegation battle may be hyperbole, it's not as wide of the mark as some on here seem to think - unless the new players come soon. The most worrying thing is that we are utterly toothless. This has f*ck all to do with injuries and suspensions.

Yes, Gus and TB both know that we need players better than anyone else, but having made it clear that promotion was a serious objective for the season and that the idea was to have the squad in place before pre-season, it is not surprising that this only moderate start to the season has not met the high expectations that have been set.

Attracting the players needed to meet the club's stated ambitions is a key part of the manager's job and however challenging this may be, it will ultimately have a major bearing on how Poyet is judged. I still have faith in him, but I hope his powers of persuasion start bringing the outcomes we need - and soon.

Ah, right! I must've imagined sparrow getting both goals at Swindon then.

highly likely we'd fill up the away end at Falmer, problem is we keep missing each other with our exploits in the various divisions, your lot have preferred to play in the 3rd/4th tiers of British football, after our last day exploits of last season we're hoping for a season of mid table mediocrity.
