Is it time as a country we decided to stop never ending benefits ? By that i mean those long-term unemployed that have no desire to work, are made to do some form of workfare. The job centre when you walk past it in Stoke-on-Trent has a steady stream of people who are looking for work. However there is also what seems a never ending list of people that seem happy to sign-on and take the benefits. Its not nice to say but by manner and appearance many i would deem as un-employable,so is not time for 'candidates' to do some form of 'local' workfare ?

How about a Victorian style workhouse ? Seriously, if peole can't find paid work, whilst they're on the benefits, why can't they spend some of their time at least doing voluntary work.

Why would they be homeless as well?

About ten years ago I worked in Edinburgh in careers advice and recruitment, at that stage unemployment in the local area was in the range of 4-5%. Most of the people who didn't have a job at that stage were either incapable of work, unwilling to work or you wouldn't want them working for you.

Sadly there will always be a small percentage of the population who would be of no benefit to any organisation or company if they were in employment. Whilst this state of affairs might be galling for those of us who have always been in gainful employment, paying them some form of benefit to keep them away from employment is probably a small price to play.

It's always a Daily Mailesque reaction to this subject. The great unwashed who never want to work, the benefit scandals, the make em dig for their dole responses, the voluntary work.

But in many place there are no jobs, just government schemes like the great modern apprentice response. If there's voluntary work, why is there no paid work?If there are 2 million unemployed and soon to be more, where are the jobs coming from?

It annoys me,too to see the same kids sucking strong lagers whilst others are going out to work, but a lot of stories are hearsay, like Fabregas is coming to the Albion on a season long loan.

It also annoys me when serial tax evaders get government advisory posts, and when you hear those hearsay stories of other tax evaders having their image rights paid tax free into offshore accounts. But even these peoples' droppings don't stink,so their social misdemeanors are largely overlooked.

What do we do with the benefit scroungers with a drug habit or a criminal record as they would be unsuitable for voluntary work ?

My next door neighbour has never worked in his life. He has an endless stream of LCD teles, x-boxes, wiis and other games consoles, foreign holidays, couple of cars, pets coming out of his ears (3 kids, 4 staffis, 2 cats, lizards, rabbits and guinnea pigs, snakes, parrot and fish), smoke like chimneys, always doing up their (council) house with new appliances, sofas etc,

And i'm getting a bit f***ed off with it.

every time i see him in the garden, it's to tell me what he's bought lately and how much he doesn't have to pay for the kids music lessons, school trips etc.

Withdean,i fail to see to someone 'that is un-employable' you can't do anything. Major U/K firms employee 'disabled' employees and those employed as a rule work hard and can be fun to work with. I fail to see why someone living i/e on Whitehawk can't be told if you fail to turn up Monday morning at ? ? ? Then goodbye benefits.

Sounds like you live next door to a pet shop. :lolol:

In that case he's fiddling the system. Grass him up.

Major UK firms employ disabled persons as a minimum of their workforce has to fall into this category. The unemployable would turn up on a Monday morning unwashed and still suffering the effects of Special Brew and skunk.
