The Wizard: Why are you laughing at BoF's comment? It's perfectly logical.

A bottle of Coke (or anything), full up, with the lid on is VERY heavy. And getting hit with one of them, at pace, would be just like getting hit with a brick.

Seems pointless them doing that though, if they don't take the lids of in the ground. I never get searched at The Withdean, but if I see a Steward approaching me, I just say I'm 15, then they're not allowed to search me.

dont get me started on bottle tops .. to late .. lid off or on makes no difference im afraid, if you (want to) chuck a bottle with said lid of at anything there is no way the liquid inside will all gush out before it hits its selected copper i mean target, yes it may lose a bit and on impact soak said target but in tests 9 out of ten italian coke drinkers said they prefer to lob lid off for explosive impact effect.

As with all things ‘Withdean’ it’s the inconsistency that riles the supporters.

Sometime they will search your bags other times they do not bother, if they find a plastic bottle in the bag, then they may sometimes ask you to remove the bottle top other times they do not bother.

If you buy a drink at the small stall at the end of the south stand they will sometimes remove the lid other times they do not bother.

Stewards always ensure that the home supporters are made to sit down, away supporters can do what they like (unless there are less than 20 away supporters, in which case the stewards will act brave and make them sit down as well).

Never been asked to remove the top of my flask, or had my mars bar confiscated (yet!)

But who is going to throw their phone or wallet on the pitch?

Remember the Liverpool(?) fan that did just that, class ... he must have thought shit just as it left his fingers!

They take a top of a plastic water bottle but you can take a flask with about a litre of fluid in it that weighs about three times that of a bottle ... logic you've gotta love it!

The "no lid rule" was supposed to have been removed years ago, after a couple of seasons at Withdean I remember.

Just another example of being treated like a child. You can take a pocket full of coins into a football ground, but not a plastic bottle with a lid on it.

that is what I was told when we first moved to Withdean ( think it was safety bloke who said it )

I'm pleased to hear that, anybody that does not realize the danger should try treading on an empty plastic bottle with the lid screwed on, and then think of the possible effect on a crowd leaving the stadium down a steep staircase. I'm sure most people would dispose of their bottles safely if they realized the danger, maybe a little education would be more effective than an iron hand?
