Best gigs you've seen

Not just for the charisma or fame of the artist - as big-name acts aren't always the picks of the crop (normally not even).

For me;
Shriekback
Dr John
King Crimson (though next time I saw them they were crap)
Rory Gallagher
Cockney Rebel
Buddy Guy
Magazine
Eddie and The Hot Rods
The WHO
Dr Feelgood (although they were also one of the worst, for the last time I saw them)
Reverend Horton Heat
Talking Heads
The Catherine Wheel
Led Zeppelin
Nils Lofgren
Simple Minds

First time I saw the Clash

1978

Electric Ballroom Camden

They blew me away with the sheer power of the set, I went on to see them another 16 times but nothing was close to that first time. Awesome

REM in Cardiff last August.

The gig was originally set for the Millennium Stadium, but was moved for some reason to the Cardiff International Arena, which holds about 5000. Even Michael Stipe said it was a brilliant change for them to play somewhere like that, so many times smaller than the stadia and arenas they're used to these days.

They were on flawless form from start to finish, absolutely brilliant night.

Keane at the Brighton Centre were pretty damn good, the show ending performance of Bedshaped was nothing short of magical. Truly amazing night, and then to be told that we'd been stuffed 4-2 at home by Peterborough!

The Rasmus at the Concorde 2 were pretty outstanding, though their material isn't up to their ability to perform it (In the shadows and living in a world without you aside). Nine Black Alps were pretty good at Audio, and I'll be seeing them again at the Freebutt (though, if it wasn't for the company I was in during the first show, and then again next month I wouldn't have thought twice about going!) in November.

Kelly Clarkson was nothing short of brilliant both times I've seen her (Hammersmith Apollo and the Brighton Centre) and I'll continue to see her in future, just for the value of SEEING her.

But I would say my favourite live performance was by Frankmusik at Audio on the seafront, absolutely electrifying. Brilliant material, magnificently performed and a truly fantastic night.

Pitchshifter at the Pavilion Theatre back around 1997 was awesome, only recently topped by seeing Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails at Oxegen Festival in Ireland.

Sunday evening/night Glastonbury 2000. A glorious red sun was setting behind the Pyramid Stage, lighting up a hundred thousand flying insects, forming halos on the heads of the faithful. Fires were dying down as the first few languid notes of "Loose Fit" wafted out over the poor, huddled masses.

Then Bez, slowly at first, then like a frog in a blender started his maracca-worrying scally shuffle, wild-eyed and calling it on, whilst wearing a flying helmet and goggles, we asked not why, it seemed to fit right in - we were ready to fly.

I turned to my best mate and whispered "This has to be the greatest place on earth to be right here, right now" he nodded in a fuggy haze, grinning from ear to ear, his head fragged after caning it over the last three days solid.

Even Shaun shuffling out like a super-annuated manc hoolie in his trackie and forgetting the words of every song couldn't spoil the moment.

As darkness descended and the immortal Bowie took the stage and played every hit from his whole career - word perfect - I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I WAS THERE. It will never be beat that night, it will live forever.

not the biggest band, nor the best but for a sheer amazing night - The Automatic at the Concorde 2 on one of the hottest days/nights of the year a few years back was something else

musically everytime I've seen Feeder they've been class (Party in the Park, Brighton Centre, Concorde 2 , Brighton Dome) and Stereophonics and Manic Street Preachers were both class

Round the back, by the bins.
AC/DC--Brighton Centre--1980ish. Fronted by the late, great Bon Scott. Awesome.
Pearl Jam--Reading Festival--couple of years ago. Special.
Led Zeppelin--Earls Court--ages ago. Shit sound, shit venue, great night.
Linkin Park--Wembley Arena--few years back. Surprisingly good.
The band that my daughter used to sing for that i've forgotten the name of--Engine Rooms--2007. Made me proud.
