Getting Asked For ID

It's not just Sainsburys who are doing it. Most companies are catching on to the idea.

I will happily ask someone who looks under 25. If you don't have ID then tough luck I'm afraid. I'm not getting fined £80 and a criminal record just so I don't piss off a few select people who think they don't need to produce ID.

What's the issue? If you're old enough to buy alcohol then there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to prove your age if asked to do so. Most young people over 17 have a photocard driving license to use for ID and, if you haven't, a tenner for a PASS card (or whatever they're called now) which enables you get served isn't exactly a hardship.

What would you do to prove it's not a FAKE? ???

Most places in the US have a similar policy but with the "look like age" limit at anywhere between 30 and 35. Actually for anyone taking in an NFL game the policy there (and this if from the horses's mouth as my friend works a concession stand at the Jacksonville stadium) is to ID EVERYONE. There are no exceptions. No ID = no beer. Not the end of the world unless you're emotionally attached to vastly overpriced Bud but thought I'd throw it in for anyone visiting the States who is planning to take in a game.

You can't really do anything to prove if it's a fake. Although if it looked crummy then I would just refuse on those grounds.

Nope, never seen any kind of need for it. It's clearly apparent to anyone with eyesight that I am over 18.

In your opinion...just because you think you're a hulking, manly brute doesn't mean everybody else does. Get over it and carry ID with you.

But is it apparent you're under 25?

I have no form of photographic ID whatsoever other than my passport, which obviously I do not carry around at all times. I have never seen any need to prove my age because it's clearly obvious to anyone with a pair of eyes that I am over the age of 18.

So far as I am concerned, while I entirely understand the need of Sainsburys and other companies to protect their staff from possible criminal proceedings, there surely has to be an element of common sense applied by the cashiers on a 'case by case' basis.

As far as asking anyone who looks under 25, the law (which, so far as I am aware, is more important than Sainsburys company policy) states that you have to be over 18, nothing more.

its a stupid policy that does sweet FA. annoy all those that are in their early-mid twenties, meanwhile any 18yo can show their ID to buy a trolly load of beer and spirits for their mates outside. or even in the next checkout as i saw tonight, getting the munchies. come to think of it, i did the same going to parties that age.

must be seen to do something though, whats more high profile than asking 28yo for ID and telling parents with teenage children they cant buy alcohol "in case its for the children"

personally, the age/ID check is one thing but if they lied to me that it is the law i'd have the manager over to explain why he is mis-training the staff.

Yeah I know

I was once told by a young person that the important thing to remember is to keep your Under-16 bus ID in a separate place from your Over-18 drinking ID.

Yeah, very important. Nearly made that mistake the other day. Bought a kiddys train ticket..and put it in my Youngs Persons Railcard holder..realised before the man came round though.

You can't really do anything to prove if it's a fake. Although if it looked crummy then I would just refuse on those grounds.

When I was with my mate in Sainsbury the other day (the one in HH, by the station) the didn't serve him, because I was STANDING with him..and because I couldn't prove i was 18 , they wouldn't even serve him.

Another shop..might have been ASDA..they had some kind of laser thing for his ID to prove it's not fake.. He does look about 16 though, to be fair.

It clearly isn't obvious if you're asked for ID. Why not, as I stated in my original post, fork out the princely sum of a tenner for a PASS card? If you can afford to drink, you can afford to pay for a government approved card that proves your age, thus avoiding any further unhappiness.

I'm not under 25.

I never said that I am a hulking manly brute (mainly because I am not, as anyone who knows me will attest), but I am clearly and obviously older than 18.

The solution to Frutos' problem is glaringly obvious. All anyone has to do is log onto here and find any post by Frutos. No one under 18 would have Eagles lyrics quoted as their location.

Simples.

What I shall do in future is shop elsewhere, in establishments where common sense is more important than company policy.

The law allows me to purchase alcohol, if Sainsburys wish to put legally unwarranted obstacles in my way, it's their loss. Anyone who has ever met me and thinks I look younger than 18 needs an eyetest, simple as that.

See, problem solved.

I used to get an ander 16 ticket at the Goldstone in its last few days until i was about 21, and was let in without question. To be fair i dont think they cared who went in as long as someone went in. In fact the for me the ultimate low point was being in the North stand toilets taking a jimmy riddle and a fellow Brighton fan saying " I remember when you used to have to queue for a piss"

Describing yourself as 6'5'', I have tattoos on both arms and at present visible stubble because I've not shaved in a while. doesn't exactly give the impression that you're a puny knock-kneed bastard, does it?

Seems like it's called Citizencard these days, used to be PASS card, anyway it's here CitizenCard
