Due to open for the new season, looks like an exact replica of St mary's and the Walkers.

I do like the idea behind this website though that has followed the construction all the way through.

Cardiff City Stadium Project

So far Jack Straws pictures have been the best, the club's efforts a little less impresive, I look forward to the web cam but it would be good to have a better explanation as to what's going on in each shot.

When you look at the pictures on this Cardiff website we can only begin to dream how good Falmer is going to look.

:falmer:

Tis a bit of a crisp bowl, but it's certainly tidy. Shame we'll lose such classic football grounds like Ninan Park.

Best thing is that it's not in the middle of an industrial estate so it's still part of that particular community.

Deeply uninspiring from the outside. It could be any stadium, anywhere, or failing that, an IKEA. Sad really, that so many football grounds are such soulless, flat-pack warehouses these days.

It would be nice to think ours would be different, but I'm honestly not expecting it will win any architectural awards. Still, unlike most clubs, anything's an improvement on our current stadium, and we won't really miss it at all.

I don't understand all of the criticisms aimed at modern stadia-who on here wouldn't have loved to have had a Walkers, Ricoh, St Mary's type of stadium over the last 12 years or so? A decent place to watch a game fairly comfortably with a few luxuries like caterers not out to poison its customers, somewhere to buy a beer and a roof to keep most of us dry. OK, Falmer will look a little different to all of the others but realistically it's still only a stadium with a roof designed to fit in with the landscape. If that wasn't a requirement we'd have had ourselves a Crisp Bowl type of venue and we'd all be loving it. And it would no doubt have been significantly cheaper.

I can't help but have a quiet chuckle when I think back to the days of Hammam banging on about the Barcelona of Britain and building a 60,000 all seater stadium. :lolol:

I know what you mean. I'm sure fans in the 19th century at places like Celtic, Aston Villa Spurs etc all moaned that they were getting 'another' Archibald Leitch stand: "I say Carruthers I think it's a rotten shame that all football grounds look the same now, what? This Leitch chap just turns out brick sheds." (Ok, I appreciate people at Celtic probably didn't speak like that but I wanted it to sound 'Victorian').

However a lot of modern grounds ARE all soulless bowls and if Falmer looks a bit different then it will have been worth waiting for.

not to sound too grumpy, but i f***ing HATE 95% of new grounds.

souless, no passion, no history, all the same, no terraces, no atmosphere.

all bollox to me.

Reading - elm park v madjeski - elm park all day long
same with:
Sunderland - Roker park
Wolves
The Den
etc etc... fair enough the Walkers and St marys are an improvement but at least the old grounds still had character.

and for away fans at least it was nice to visit different grounds that actually look different! ya know?!

Engineering Archie is a good book if you haven't read it.

Wolves

Interesting that you count Molineux as a new ground... Wolves are looking at building a new stadium top replace the small and outdated Molineux (28,000 capacity, built in 1988 [Steve Bull stand] and 1992 [the other 3 stands])

It doesn't have this anymore though:

And they did move the pitch a bit as well.

The South Bank

That was replaced in 1992. I do agree with the new grounds being soul-less - this season I am planning a trip to Craven Cottage because it looks fab.

Edit - actually that could be the north bank.

I haven't, so thanks for the info. I DO think it's a shame that a lot of the character of football grounds has been lost. My favourite 'old' ground was White Hart Lane which had character and atmosphere. The modern WHL is just a bland shadow of its former self. If we were moving into something like the Walkers we'd all pine for the Goldstone, crumbling terraces, stinking toilets and all.
