Would Southern rail be putting on extra services to cater for the upsurge of people getting off/on this station by the time the stadium is built.? Particularly on Saturday afternoons, I wonder of the club has thought of this.
Seemingly they would want as many fans to travel by public transport as possible. Has this been covered or bought to the attention already?

Shit, glad you mentioned that. Doubt the club have even noticed there is a station nearby.

I think there are four trains an hour from Brighton to Falmer in the day and possibly two an hour in the evening? Perhaps a Shuttle Service might be arranged?

I went to a couple of Pompey games last season and as the fans arrive at Fratton station, the platform staff just fill up the platform then shut a gate until that lot has gone on the first train, and so on until everyone has got away. I think the platforms at Fratton were bigger than Falmer though...

I think British Bulldog has answered this before, and the answer is no. Something to do with it taking years to change timetables and the signalling capacity of that bit of track. There's a few on here who are ITK about the railways so I'm sure someone can give a proper answer

I take it the public enquiries passed you by ? ???

The signalling on the line is such that they can't run more than five trains an hour. The option of putting on longer trains isn't available either - 8 coach trains won't fit into the Coastway platform at Lewes.

The other factor that will affect supporters is that the line is very busy with other passengers - not every seat will be available for Albion fans.

Having said all that ... travel to games will probably be OK (since arrival times at football matches are spread over quite a long period). If the club can find a way of spreading post-match departure times (like a decent post-match bar), things won't be too bad for people who are prepared to delay their rush for the platform.

There will, however, have to be some way of "penning in" queuing fans waiting to get on to the Brighton-bound platform. You can't simply allow more people on to a station platform than is safe.

how much is a cab from brighton station to Falmer? in recent years I've done this to get to Withdean as I cant be arsed with the long walk from PP, so when theres 4 of you the cab fare is bugger all!

From the Streamline Taxis website:-

Streamline 747474 - 202020 enjoys a long standing relationship with the University of Sussex & Brighton University and we offer set rates for the following journeys:

From Sussex University to the city centre area with a single drop-off & no waiting :
Brighton Station - North Street - Preston Street - West £12 for a four seater saloon
For each person over four passenger £1 per person for a multi-seater vehicle
Any further journey after the first drop-off is metered.

Brighton & Hove Streamline Taxis 747474-202020 Fair Fares

My guess is that this "set-price" offer involves a bit of a discount. But it's a basic guide to what to expect.

so maybe about £15ish then split with 4 is just (doing maths in head.....2mins later) just under 4 quid each....might be worth it to save train queues on the way in.

cheers LB

Oh my word, how many times have we discussed this? Basically if youre thinking about getting the train to matches (which would be ideal for me) then think again.

It will all depend on the demand and the times people will travel, for instance if everyone turns up for the as is now the 1422 to Falmer which is booked 4 coaches it might be a tad full. But I'd imagine that people will be spreading out their journey especially if there is a decent watering hole at the ground, in this instance I'd reckon the train service TO the match will cope.
Of course afterwards will be a different matter and if a 12000 crowd descend on the station afterwards for a train back to Brighton then it will be absolute chaos.

Interestingly ... the first version of the planning application that the Club put into the City Council (when the plan was to build the stadium in two stages), the Club's transport consultants submitted estimates of the numbers who could travel by train.

For the "phase one" stadium (about 14,000 capacity, if I remember rightly), they reckoned about 2,500-3,000 might be expected to use the train. Once the second phase was completed (an extra 8,000 seats), they reckoned the railway would take exactly the same number.

The train operator said that they were confident they could cope with those numbers.

It may well be the case that problems will only arise with crowds in excess of 14,000. I'll leave Ernest to speculate when we will rise up the league to the point that there will be sell-out crowds at every game.
