Well it would be rude not to and, for anyone of the 33,600 odd that were there at the Goldstone, it just HAS to be the 4th Round of the League Cup in 1976.

Albion had started the season on fire, storming the league div 3 and having already baeten 2 quality Div 1 (prem) teams in Ipswich & WBA but Deby were one of the really top clubs of the day.

Cup fever gripped Sussex. No fiddling about trying to cope selling 8,000 tickets back then, oh no. Selling tickets, and earning even more £'s, they were on sale for a reserve game with Charlton and nearly 18,000 turned up 9we won 3-0).

On the big night, the excitement was intense. The north was packed and singing, so was the South and even the west but then, just as the teams lined up for kickoff, i heared, for probably the only time, the roar of the hordes on the vast east terrace. I have never felt the same, before of since, the tingles that ran through your spine and the hairs standing on your neck at the noisde and electric atmosphere that fair rolled around the Goldstone.

Deby kicked off, attacking the south goal and sliced, like a knife through butter, right through the middle only for Peter Grummit to fling himself at the feet of the great Charlie George.

As the crowd gasped, Grummit launched a punt upfield and now it was Wardy slicing his way through the Derby defence and GOAL!!!!!! What a 1st min to start a game.

The game carried on at a hectic pace and and Deby eventually pulled it around to 1-1. Three train loads, and many by road, made the replay at the baseball ground where Albion gave a good account of themselves before bowing out 2-1 in what was probably our most memorable League Cup run.

In the Championship a few years ago.

It was a horrible day, pissing down with rain and freezing cold the whole game, deadlocked at 0-0 until Kerry Mayo popped up to score an 89th minute winner.

"in what was probably our most memorable League Cup run".

My Old Man would have something to say about that.

He is always prattling on about the 78/79 run which ended with the evening game at Forest.

Granted forest was, i believe, the 5th Round and they were a top club but we had also moved up a division. Also, the earlier rounds had been pretty ordinary, infact i can't recall our run & your old man would probably struggle to too.

In 76/77 we were 3rd div. We beat Southend over the 1st round 2 legs then a draw at ipswich before beating them in dramatic style at the goldstone infront of 26,000 with a last min goal and we were down to 10 men due to injury.

Then we went away to div 1 WBA and tore them apart. Wardy scored the 2 goals but it could have been 5, and we had massive support to cheer us on. no, every game in that run was a good'un and the 3 games against Ipswich & WBA would each stand out as classics in their own rights.

I was given the job of getting a ticket for my older brothers mate.

I had to pay 3 quid - yes 3 quid - off a friend from school and also give him 10Gold Leaf.

What an atmostphere that night.

Charlie George is a wanker.. is a wanker.

I do feel for the youngsters who will never see those days.

The wba game had two football specials packed out and loads by road,I had no ticket but got let on one of the specials at the last miniute by ron pavey.
Ward and Mellor took them apart, every time their keeper got the ball he punted it out and either ward or mellor got it back and launched another attack on the goal.the keeper was going frantic making stops or seeing the ball flash past his posts. my greatest memory was of the west brom keeper kneeling, facing us and praying to god for the onslaught to stop.

and if i was to name myself after an albion mamager it would be Pat Saward

What a game that was at West Brom -in my top 3 away matches. We outclassed the Baggies and Willie Johnston got so frustrated he lost his rag and got sent off.
The support that night was superb- my voice took about 3 days to recover.

What a night - 26th October 1976, I just dug out my 10p programme - the only one I am missing from that Season is the Ipswich League Cup game (it was 35p for under 16s to get in and stand on the North Stand which was HEAVING that night!)

The team listed in the programme was:

Grummitt
Tiler
Wilson
Horton
Rollings
Cross
Towner
Ward
KMellor
Piper
O'Sullivan
Sub: TBA

As a matter of interest, the Crowd for the previous League game at home to Peterborough was over 18,000 - and remember we were playing in the same tier of football as we are now.

OMG what a night that was! I was on the East Terrace with my old man and 1-0 up inside a minute was absolutely brilliant.

We had gone to the Charlton reserve game and got the tickets. Bloody good idea that was. Of course the moaners would complain if the club tried that these days, and there's only a fraction of the potential punters that we had then.

Someone needs to draw up a poll of the best Albion games they ever saw. That Derby game ought to get in most 40-somethings Top Ten.

What a wonderful idea, everyone lists their favourite games (that they actually saw) and we all get to choose a top ten...can I offer this one for starters:

Brighton 2 - 1 Bristol Rovers - last game of 87/88 season

Very good idea....for another thread!

Very difficult though as those wonderfully entertaining games which might not have much hanging on them, are not so easilly remembered as those 'backs to the wall' games where we grind out those unexpected results especially away from home.

Can you post the Derby side up too? had some quality players. Apart from Charlie george they probably had the Scots midfielders Rioch & Gemmil, expencive defenders in nish, mafarland & Todd and, in the 1st game, i think Mose was in goal.

0-0 a couple of seasons ago, Alan Blayney saved a Idiakez pen. Jake cracked a 35 yarder against the bar (or that could have been Southampton)
