and on the subject of olympic events ....

Why are professional tenins players permitted to compete (Nadal, Federer, etc.) but pro boxers are not?

I always thought the olympics was for amatuer sports(wo)man ?

Can someone explain please?

Those Brazilian sisters compete at this sport don't they? This is one very good reason why it's in.

I do not think amateur tennis exists full-stop. Football, you would be pushed to find amateur footballers of a standard expected of olympians.

I think it is more to do with the fact that amateur boxing is a burgeoning sport as opposed to many other disciplines.

They have different sets of rules for amateur boxing than for professional boxing.

The FA (don't know if this applies to FIFA) did away with the distinction between amateur and professional footballers in 1974.

I think a sport where there is measurable results is allowable. When you get a victor due to the whim of judges I think it ruins it as " Competetive" sport. So,
Gymnastics, Syncro Swimming, Diving etc. should be dropped.

Talksport were right when they said darts should be allowed....

Way out west
archery is just darts with an ASSISTING piece of machinery so infact darts is MORE athletic:thumbsup::clap2:

Fair call, you can be an archer and be a right jabber at the same time, there is no need to do any athletic training whatsoever...can't really compare it with the effort needed to train and cycle nearly 80 miles!

peerhaps they should let the public do a phone viote..

The sad thing is, you can already imagine ITV executives chucking that concept into their planning meetings in the run up to London 2012.

The O Factor: a televised talent show in which a series of desperate individuals with a vague sporting bent stand in front of Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Colin Jackson and Clare Balding, and show off their athletic talents, while Tess Daly urges viewers at home to vote for who gets the much coveted Olympic slot.

Coming soon to a tv screen near you...
