On the subject of wine, did anyone see OZ anf James' wine tour on BBC2 lastnight? James May has gone from a total wine idiot in the first series to actually seeming quite knowledgeable.

just a matter of personal taste rather than any wine snobbery.

there are some very acceptable english wines but because of our climate they tend (unavoidably) to be german-style along the lines of reisling or hock which isn't really what I like so I dont go out and buy either english or german wines.

Quite happy to drink it if offered and I think some of our better vintages can be superior to their more established european counterparts

Interesting. Then may respectfully I point you in the direction of the Cornish wine I said I liked at the top of the thread. It's very reminiscent - say the rosy-cheeked, portly, bow-tie wearing expert/snobs (and I tend to agree) - of Sancerre. And it's less expensive.

If Sancerre floats your boat, that is.

Looks like you can only get it online direct from Camel Valley. For some reason, The English Wine Centre doesn't stock it, and when I was down in Cornwall, those people said that the EWC was the only other place that stocked it.

Sancerre in Sainsbury's is about £10 a bottle, so it's you can buy it cheaper after all, but the French tend to keep the best stuff for themselves.

Cheap - Burra Brook Semillion - Aussie (M&S) or Le Froglet Chardonnay (M&S) ( both about a fiver)
Expensive - Sancerre - from my mates grandads vinyard outside Orleans ( £75.00)

Red

Cheap - Pinot Noir from Chile ( M&S) ( £5.00)
Expensive - Gimblet travells cabernet Merlot - New Zealand (£8.00 odd)


Rose

Cheap - Italian frizante - cheap little rose that is great to glug (M&S about £4.50)
Expensiveish - french Anjou Rose - can but it anywhere, but the good stuff is about £10 a bottle


I know I should support local wine growers but i dont like English wine per se.

How good a mate is he Dave? that sounds outrageous not expensive. I know it's often more expensive to buy from the vineyard than a cave or supermarket but 100 euro plus Sancerre?
