Albion midfielder regrets playing
By Andy Naylor
GEORGE O'Callaghan admitted today he has only himself to blame for losing his place with Albion.

O'Callaghan was so desperate to face his old club Port Vale that he let his heart rule his head and declared himself fit, despite struggling with a hamstring tear.

The Irish midfielder made the damage worse in the 1-0 victory at Vale Park earlier this month, forcing him out of the last two matches against Leeds and Hartlepool.

O'Callaghan said: "It obviously made it a lot worse and I don't think I did myself any favours but it was a game I was desperate to play in.

"I've done myself damage and maybe I should be a bit more experienced to know not to do that but I had waited so long to go back there and I might never get the chance again. It was a bit of a mistake but it is done now and I just have to get over it."

O'Callaghan resumed training with Albion yesterday after returning to parent club Ipswich for treatment.

He is eager to win his place back from Tommy Fraser in the centre of the park as the Seagulls prepare for Saturday's home game against Ipswich.

"The hamstring feels good," he said. "Ipswich just kept me until I was match fit again. They have sent me back now and I am ready to play, so I am just looking forward to getting back into the games again.

"I had a tear in my hamstring but, because I played with it for two or three weeks, there was about 14 centimetres of blood and fluid around it, so I had to wait until that all healed up. It's fine now and I am delighted to be back fit.

"The lads have done well in the last couple of games, so I think I have got a fight on my hands.

"Tommy is a smashing player and fair play to him, he has got his chance and taken it. That is what it is all about.

"The club needs competition for places but I've come back to play games, I won't be sitting on the bench.

"That is the most important thing for me. I could sit in the Championship on the bench but I don't want to do that. We'll just see what happens in the next week or two."

Reading the last two lines it does seem to say if I dont play Im off.

Reading between the lines, that seems to be what he is intimating and fair enough. He is trying to get games under his belt to get his career back on track. He would be my first team on the name sheet. Even if that would mean moving Hammond over to the left and having Cox on the right. I think he would be dynamite teamed up with Forster.

Have I missed something?

Yes, we are a Championship side, where have you been Rumplestiltskin?

Actually, spotters badge, obviously a typo after they were mentioning his return to Ipswich for treatment.

Reading between lines of that statement from O'C though, I'd say he's just hoping to get on, and he's prepared to sit on the bench - and "see what happens".
He's being diplomatic, nobody in the squad wants to hear anyone say "I expect to take (so and so's) place at any minute, now I'm fit again".

After several seasons of watching us have a dodgy midfield (and suffer for it!) it's excellent to think we have some kind of strength in depth there at the minute.

really ?

he's a decent player yer but 1st name on team sheet?

Slight exaggeration on my part maybe, but I do enjoy watching him.

I am feeling quite positive about this squad and if we can keep him playing, then he may be keen to sign on until the end of the season, if that is possible and I think he will be critical to a potential playoff campaign.

George is CLASS and has to start if fit. I agree with the BOFster; Cox/George/Fraser/Hammond is the way forward.

think if george is gonna start you would have to play that way hoping that he could open up defences playing that bit further forward but just don't like hammo out wide

My mistake, I was wondering why we're playing teams like Leeds:D

tricky decision for Wilkins, I would say that due to our poor 2nd half performance last week vs 10 men then O'call has to come back in.

This is where I swear by keep the shirt, its only fair.

George is a cracking player, but he has got himself injured and out of the squad. He must now wait his chance to get back in the starting 11, even if it means sitting on the bench for 75 minutes on Saturday.

I know he wont like it but, you don't change a winning squad.

There is also another game 3 days later so I'm pretty sure he'll get the chance in one or t'other.

O'Callaghan in the Argus the Wednesday before the Port Vale game:

O'Callaghan went off early in the second half of Tuesday's victory over Barnet in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, but he expects to shrug off a slight injury to play in, what for him, is the biggest match of the season. "I've got a sore hamstring and I probably shouldn't have played, but as soon as we got the second goal I came off to rest it for Saturday," O'Callaghan said.

"I don't want to miss any games, especially this one. When I signed here it was the first game I looked for. I would like to go there 100 per cent fit and be right. I don't want to go there and be half-fit. I am sure everything will be fine and I just can't wait to get going."

Nice one.

If he's just recovered from injury then a place on the bench is probably his best option. But Wilkins will have to make a change if Revell's out (prob Forster) and he was quick to bring back Cox after suspension. Maybe he could play 5 in midfield (Fraser, Hammond, O'Call, Cox, Martot) with just Forster up front?
