Manning was a legend. Not by the oldies but the younger generation as well. The only people who are ashamed are New Labour, i.e. Blair and Brown and co.

I'm not defending him, but didn't he say immediately afterwards that he said 'Yes' deliberately because he knew Merton was expecting him to say 'No'? He was apparently trying to turn the tables on him... unless that's too cynical!?
I think he said on the same show that his view on racism was that he was racist to all ethnicities - including his own?

I don't think so. It was quite something for someone as well known as Manning to admit that he was a racist. I think Caroline Aherne was genuinely taken aback when he said that. How many people admit they're racist on prime time TV? Not many and I don't recall even the BNP doing that. And it's such a cop out for him to say that about being racist against all ethnicities. How many times are white men really the butt of ethnic jokes in this country?
I am saddened about how much support he has on this board. Poeple can bang on about his timing etc (undeniable) but at the end of the day he was a self confessed racist. I don't see how anyone can possibly defend that.

Like I said, I'm not defending it - i'm just repeating how the format of the show went. He claims he said what he said to screw around with the interview. Whether he was lying through his teeth or not is another matter!

One, I wish people who use the phrase 'PC' would explain what it means. It seems to be used as a term of abuse, yet doesn't seem to have any value to it. However, seeing as it appears to be directed towards us 'lefties', it is obviously supposed to mean something. I just wish I knew what it was.
Secondly, when it comes to saying what people think - we all are. Just because it is the opposite view of yours, it doesn't mean that the same thought processes weren't followed to arrive at one's opinion. It's what we all base our judgement values on which differs, meaning we come to a different conclusion.
Therefore, I could be equally disingenuous and say to you 'say what you think, not what Bernard Manning tells you...', but I'm not going to, because that would be churlish due to the fact that your original 'PC / nanny state' criticism point is not valid.

I think anyone who would listen to the late BM and think he was trying to direct them in any way would indeed be a little odd. He was a comedian who attempted to make people laugh (opinions are divided on his success there)
I do not think he was recruting in any way. There are fewer racists on here than you would imagine but there are a lot of wind-up merchants. I think though that people jump onto the anti-pc bandwagon when certain people become over defensive of foreigners or immigrants or fail to tell the truth over certain peoples failure to intergrate in our communities.

BM spent all his life in the area he was born. With his money he could have lived anywhere but chose to stay in the place he loved.
His jokes were often based in his enviornment, a depressed and run down area to which many immigrants moved. Whether they are to blame for it becoming run down is another matter but that's how he saw it.
Most of us down south have not seen our streets and estates being populated by those from overseas so how do we know we would not feel the same, to some degree?
He made millions. He wouldn't have done so if there was not a 'market' for his humour.
I don't like every song a singer may sing or every joke a comedian may make but i liked a fair % of his, does that make me a racist, baring in mind a lot of his jokes were not about race at all.
I'm more offended by commedians who have to insert swear words into every line.

It's probably the other way round with Bernard Manning fans. However, while Bernard deliberately went out of his way to shock and to push the boundaries (or rather certain aspects of society's boundaries changed during his career to exclude him from what was considered acceptable), he is also used by some as a justification for their opinions rather than seeing him as a recruitment officer.
However, there is a difference between 'telling the truth about certain people's failure to integrate in our communities' and wishing wholesale death and misery on an entire race (see 'joke' about air travel above). The fact that he was trying to cover this up with humour doesn't detract from the fact that he specifically zeroed in on certain targets - many of whom have integrated well - and not others, without too much rhyme or reason.
Is my concern about these issues covered by what is meant by the term 'PC'?
Regarding this concept of 'failure to integrate' issue, I wonder if, had he been a contemporary, he would have held an opinion on the British occupation of India and the British failure to integrate...? Just a thought.
