Can anyone tell me how on earth Darren Bent is worth MORE than Thierry Henry?
I just don't get it. Also, just why do British players cost so much more than foreign players?

As Danny Seagull says, he's younger. Henry is 30 (or is just about to turn 30). He realistically has (about) 2 years left at the top of his game, maybe 3 if he's lucky. Darren Bent has proved he can score goals in the Premiership (albeit not on the same scale as Henry) and has about 10 years left at the top level.

Barca are paying about £4-5m a season for Henry. Spurs are paying £1.6m a season. So the real question is, is Henry worth 3 Darren Bents?

I think this is laughable. NO wonder there are so many foreign imports when English players are vastly over-valued and over-rated.

Darren Bent £16.5 million - you're having a laugh!!!

Indeed, Berbs was 5 million less.

West Brom want 10 million for Curtis Davis as well, joke.
You can pick up two international players for that.

Disagree. At 29, Henry is at his peak. Nowadays with improved fitness and diet, players go on much longer than they did in the past. Henry will have at least 4 or 5 years left if he stays injury free. Yes Darren Bent is a promising young player but he has not played in the Champions league and looked way of the pace when he played for England. His fee was, in my opinion, well, well above what it should have been and there's no way anyone can convince me that he's worth as much as a genuinely world class player like Henry.

I agree, I don't think Bent is worth £16m. Charlton have done a great deal. But it's still something of a misnomer to compare the two deals.

Henry may have 4 or 5 years left, but not at Barcelona; there's no way he can maintain his current standards for that long. And when he leaves Barcelona, it will be for a relatively small sum (if anything at all).

Darren Bent will have a sell on value when he leaves Spurs (assuming he isn't there for 10 years). Say they have him for 10 years and he is a moderate success, it is likely that they will still be able to recoup the majority of the fee they've paid for him, thereby effectively getting him for just the cost of his wages.

This is the other side of the Henry transfer; Arsenal have had some of the best years of his career (I think probably THE best years of his career) and have still made £5m profit on him. So they've only had to pay wages - £5m for his services and for all those goals.

The big difference is that Henry is capable of earning his club more than the Bent transfer by his ability to score in European football. I've yet to be convinced that Bent could even make the step up to that level. That alone makes him worth far more than Bent doesn't it?

I agree with most of the post above. Barcelona are the club who will lose out most here. They have bought an ageing player for £16m, who is well past his best, and will get a couple of ok seasons from him before his value hits rock bottom. Arsenal have done a fairly good deal, although I always thought they should have sold up when there was talk of £50m a few summers back. Henry's just too much of a tart for my liking.

As for Bent, well as everyone seems to agree there is no way on earth he is worth £17m, but even with only moderate success I still think Spurs will be able to sell him on for at least £10-£12m, so the risk isn't all that great. On the other hand, he may do well, in which case his value will stick or even increase. Again though, he's not really a player I rate, and regardless of how much they're paying I would have stayed well clear, especially at a club that should have top 4 aspirations.

"Too much of a tart"?? !! What does that mean? Shame we haven't got any tarts like that down at the Albion! He is one of the top five playes in the world and has electrified the Premiership for seven years before getting injured last season. And I just don't think you can say Henry's " well past his best." He is only 29.

Barcelona will not lose out. Quite the opposite I think. Henry will score loads of goals for them and did you see how many poeple turned out to greet him when he signed the other day? More than 25,000. Although it's not a part of the game I like, it's an inescapable fact that the mega clubs will exploit every marketing angle that a player like Henry brings. In this case, millions.

He is 30 in 2 weeks time, and spent most of last season out with various injuries. That could be bad luck, but it could be a sign that he's getting injury prone. How long realistically do you think he is going to be in the Barca first XI? I do conceed though that marketing was one aspect I hadn't heard of, and they will certainly make a mint out of him that way.

Henry on his day is one of the best in the world... but he does have a habit of going missing in big games, and when he's struggling he really isn't very effective. It will be interesting to see how he gets on at Barca; if his goals fire them to the Spanish League and the Champions League at least once each in the next couple of seasons then he will justify the fee, else it's a bit dodgy whether he's good business or not.
