If UEFA do allow Palace to participate in the EL, won’t that set a precedent for future European competitions, and won’t UEFA be at pains to avoid that?

In future, will dodgy owners/shareholders just ride roughshod over the rules, and use this Palace case as a get out clause.

Doesn’t our criminal law say that ignorance of the law is no defence?
Way to late for that line of thinking with city/Chelsea and others

He can’t have long to sell the shares. And even if he can, does Textor really care if Palace make Europe if it means he loses out on a few quid by rushing it through?

My take on it:
Palace went to UEFA to explain why they’d not complied with rules that apply to every team who are, or may become, eligible to enter a competition.
UEFA haven’t decided to let them in because the reason for non-adherence to the rules is, frankly, nonsense; half a dozen other clubs were in the mix to qualify, all of them are (or should be) as aware of the rules as a bunch of old guys on a rival’s forum.
So, IMO, UEFA are running this through their legal advisors to ensure the expulsion is watertight. They will also be considering the legal ramifications of allowing Palace to stay in, given Forest’s position.
Gut feeling: they’ll be booted out.

Which all sounds fine, but Finance God Kieran Maguire said he's 95% sure Palace will get in.

I'm with you I think. When you read into it, the rules seem pretty clear, and it would cause them more trouble than not to bend them for Palace.

Also, I think this would clear us from enjoying a European run we don't deserve - which we'll no doubt be accused of.

Unless... it's like in match threads when someone says "There's no way [x] is going to score" hoping that the football gods then make them look foolish (even though it was their plan all along!).

Also, maybe manages expectations if it doesn't come to pass.

I DO have a feeling its as @happypig says, maybe they're ensuring it's watertight before announcing. Either way. But hopefully the CORRECT way! :lol"

On what grounds exactly?

Sorry, I've not been fully keeping up at the back.

My take is that Textor will refuse to sell any shares at a loss, nor will he give away any control (voting rights) without adequate recompense. Quite likely to result in a stalemate, with Palace forfeiting their European spot, unless the other shareholders are willing to take a big hit.
I do feel sympathy towards their genuine fans and am quite ambivalent as to whether or not we benefit as a result.

Ah, I missed this. Hard to imagine him being wrong to be fair.

Unless he had OD’d watching European C**bath numbers 1-28.

If so, then quite frankly he would be in no fit state to make reliable proclamations following that.

If KM says its not happening, its not happening.

Q: "Kieran Maguire" ever been wrong about anything?

AI: Kieran Maguire is a highly respected expert on football finance—an academic who teaches at the University of Liverpool, author of The Price of Football, and a frequent broadcaster for Sky, BBC, and podcasts reddit.com+15en.wikipedia.org+15redcafe.net+15. As with any expert in a complex field, he's had his share of critiques and misjudgements. Here's a balanced appraisal:

🔍 Notable Criticisms & Missteps

  1. Optimism over Rangers finances
In November 2023, Maguire predicted that Rangers FC could nearly match Celtic in turnover and profit—only for it to emerge that Celtic’s £119.9 m turnover and £40.7 m profit dwarfed Rangers’ £83.7 m turnover and £4.1 m loss—a £36 m turnover gap and £44.8 m profit difference videocelts.com.
A blogger later called this a “wishful thinking” and suggested Maguire was “so hopeless at analysing football finances that I wouldn’t trust him with the cost of a season ticket” redcafe.net+15thecelticblog.com+15videocelts.com+15.
  2. Underestimating Ibrox’s financial issues
His earlier analysis of Rangers' accounts drew criticism from forums like The Celtic Blog, which claimed he'd repeatedly described the club as financially robust—even as deeper financial issues became apparent thecelticblog.com+1videocelts.com+1.
  3. Everton’s transfer spending confusion
Maguire admitted surprise when Everton’s 2022/23 accounts showed £91 m spent on transfers, despite public messaging about being under spending restraint reddit.com+15goodisonnews.com+15goodisonnews.com+15—highlighting a mismatch between club narrative and accounted reality.

🧠 Community Feedback

In fan forums and social media, opinions vary:

  • Reddit (r/coys): Some users describe him as “self-deprecating while hugely arrogant” and “at times lacking deep knowledge,” though others value his clarity on complex financial rules redcafe.net+1reddit.com+1.
  • Reddit (r/Hammers): Hammers fans appreciated his observational commentary, though some questioned whether underlying debt was fully captured in his analysis reddit.com.

Summary

  • Yes, Maguire has occasionally been faulted for over-optimistic forecasts, especially regarding Rangers’ finances.
  • He's transparent and willing to admit when numbers don’t align—the Everton example illustrates that.
  • Critics say he can sound confident even when uncertain, but he remains highly trusted for explaining intricate financial issues.

🎯 Final Verdict

Kieran Maguire is not infallible—no expert is. But he routinely responds to challenges and often revises his position when faced with new data. Occasional misinterpretations (like the Rangers turnover gap) don't diminish his overall credibility. If you're evaluating his expertise, weigh both his strong analytical clarity on financial frameworks and his openness to correction when the facts shift.

If KM says its not happening, its not happening.
I remember when he told us all that Jim Gannon was DEFINITELY going to be the new Albion boss.

He was so wrong he had to ban himself from here for FORTY DAYS.

Having watched them wave kryptonite in front of Fulham, Villa and Citeh for the cup run – turning them all magically to sh*t on matchday (plus #Hendersongate), the 'nearly got kicked out of UEL... only to go on and win it' story is a bit unsettling, as well as being a great motivator for them. Especially, given Glasner has won it before.

If there's some jammy fortune swashing around, you bet Palarse will lap it up. They've already lucked out with the UCL teams now not dropping into UEL. I just feel they'll squirm their way around these rules somehow - so my passport is very much tucked away in the low expectation drawer.

(Might stick £20 on the Nigels winning the Europa League – mainly because my bets never come off when I actually put them on).
