[Music] Most over-rated albums

I loved the first Stone Roses album. Remember 'Made of Stone' being a highlight of the disco at The Escape's 'Apple Orchard' and 'Sunshine Playroom' nights. It was C86 stuff, another floor filler was The Field Mice's 'Sensitive'. The Roses seemed like one of our bands, an indie band, so it was incredible when they were suddenly the biggest thing in the country. However there was no backlash when they got big, because the album was just too good to resist. Especially as I bought the import version with 'Elephant Stone' on.

I think The Kings of Leon's first album 'Youth and Young Manhood' was their best (superb imho) but all their later ones got more attention even though I thought they became increasingly meh as their fame and hype grew.

I've always had a blind spot when it comes to Steely Dan. The critics rave about them as solid gold classics but every one leaves me completely cold: brilliantly played, slick and smooth as they come ... but just sterile to me

The Smiths are an acquired taste. I hated them with a passion for years, but now I love them. 'Shoplifters of the World' was my gateway track and 'The World Won't Listen' the album that got me wanting more.

Sorry for the brief thread highjack, but as you're not enjoying it and you'd be the one to ask this. I've got quite a few Steve Earle albums: Guitar Town, Copperhead Road, Jerusalem, El Corazon, Exit 0, plus a few compilations. I recently picked up an album called 'Sidetracks', an odds and sods sort of thing, with some nice covers on it. It's an incredibly genre jumping album, irish jigs, Nirvana covers, folk tunes, etc.

It also has a cover of 'Johnny Too Bad' from 'The Harder They Come' soundtrack. It's a good song, played well and done with his usual total commitment. However, I don't think I've ever heard anyone do country reggae before. It's so alien that I can't decide whether I like it. Do you know it? If so, what do you think?

I have a record shop, and have nearly been chased out of it on numerous occasions when I announce that everything by Dylan leaves me cold..!!
Personally, I've tried listening to Van Morrison - Astral Weeks over & over again thinking it must be me, but I just can't see what all the fuss is about!!

Astral Weeks blows my mind after a few glasses of wine (red).

I bought 'Aja' on cassette cheap in Woolworths because of the sample of 'Peg' on 'Eye Know' by De La Soul. Had little idea who they were. I've never been glamping or skiing, but must admit @Nitram, that I do very much like jazz, so am probably just a different type of w@nker ).

If you like jazz, the sound they make is fairly irresistible. I get all the cocaine, chauvinist, self indulgent, antithesis of punk's DIY attitude critique. I agree with a lot of it. It's just that, on some days, when I'm in a certain mood, I think they might make a sound that no other band has ever beaten.

Nothing they did from '67 onwards is "boy band". Helter skelter , I am the Walrus, Long and Winding Road, Nowhere Man, for example.
