Don’t Look Up.

A good film yet fundamentally depressing because in the real context of all the known existential threats to planet Earth, if leaders and politicians are not listening to those that are warning us the world is in crisis, especially due to climate change, then we are all doomed.

I can remember watching it with the rest of the lads in the mess. I was serving on a front line Junglie squadron at the time. It was a somber viewing interspersed with some very dark humour ( apparently nuking Sheffield could only be seen as an improvement). The major view was that we’d be in Norway or Germany, so chances are we’d be taken out shortly there after and so wouldn’t be worried about survival. Grimm viewing and considered depressingly accurate.

When I was at college we watched some mad Soviet War Film at film club, about Belarusians and some young soldier, pretty bleak and depressing, quite disturbing actually, very good though, can’t remember what it was called. Other than that probably Jackass 4D.

Son of Saul

Passion of The Christ

Life is Beautiful

The Captain

The Photographer of Mauthausen

Four of them are about WW2 and, whilst great films, show the depravity of humans against others. Given that events and characters are based on reality it’s shocking .

Most disturbing is definitely Salo: 120 days of Sodom (bit surprised it's not been mentioned as it's out on its own, not a film I'm in a hurry to see again)

Most thought provoking is possibly Minority Report, particularly in the light of recent AI claims that it will be possible to predict crimes before they happen. It may be something else by tomorrow though

EDIT: I've thought of another - Metropolis, Fritz Lang's vision of the future

Lars von Trier's Dogville

In a world where human nature is fundamentally flawed beneath a thin veneer of respectability, rejecting Grace will only lead to destruction.

(Admittedly that may well not have been the message that the problematic von Trier was looking to convey, but it's the one that I took from it.)

The Woodsman was a great movie, and a brave and sympathetic performance from Kevin Bacon playing the part of a paedophile. Very thought provoking.
