Early doors in this shit show of a refereeing performance Newcastle had a shot which appeared to go wide. Their players claimed a corner.

After what seemed like an age, and the ref talking into his mike he gave the corner.

My question, who was he talking to? The lino was running away from the corner and clearly thought it was a goal kick. The fourth official was miles away by comparison to the ref, similarly the other Lino. So was it VAR?

Which made me think are they allowed to generally chat about decisions like this with them because this feels like the only explanation?

The only thing I would say, is Bart didn't seem to protest at all when the corner was given. Did he get a slight touch?

Yes - you could see it on the replay, a very slight touch. Not sure how Pawson made his mind up though, because it didn't look like it in real time.

It was very strange.

However, I don't have any objection with the officials working as a team to come up with a correct decision, rather than just guessing and getting it wrong.

But just the onfield officials - not the VAR officials on issues they're not meant to be involved in?

Judging by his decision making over the whole game, I suspect it was these guys…

Absolutely this. Was right in line with that attempt in WSL.
Goal kick all day long. Move on.
Then decided corner.

Bad fan. Watched on telly today. That one hit Van Hecke and Verbruggen and was definitely a corner but needed a slo mo for both. Both deft touches and missable by refs and lineos. Did well to get it right.

But wasn't that the OP's actual point? Who did well to "get it right". With the naked eye at full speed you'd never see those touches and neither ref or lino had a clue. What with the delay you could easily conclude that VAR helped them out when they are not meant to be involved.

He was asking for directions on the quickest route out of Brighton to avoid the traffic jams.

The VAR officials will take any opportunity to get involved. It's in their DNA to overreach.

Probably it was them he was talking to

.....and there lies the problem with VAR. Why did someone have to start making silly rules about what they could or could not do? If they were just told to spot and point out the glaring errors that most of the time the fans see perfectly well, they might be useful. But micro-managing trivial things to the nth. degree - did that brush the hairs on his arm, was the wind blowing that lock of hair offside - nah, that's just a pain in the arse. They got the basic premise wrong.

Was a weird one in real time from behind the goal. Looked for all the world like two of ours messed up going for the same ball, allowing one of their to get a shot in that went a foot past the post and the keeper never got anywhere near.

Note to self: should 'of' gone to Specsavers
