If anyone is struggling to find an NHS one, Lancing Dental Care books are open for new NHS registrations until 14 March.

Just been in there for my bi-annual check up. Same as usual; All fine, 3 minutes, £27 please and thank you.

My dentist puts my good teeth down to frequent trips to the hygienist. At £60 a pop, it’s well worth it for not having to fork out for dental procedures.

Anyway, yes, the books are open.

I go to Dental Essence in Haywards Heath and they are quite simply brilliant and very friendly.

Last week a huge piece of enamel came off one of my front teeth and I got an emergency appointment just an hour later! Still being careful with it (avoiding hard foods) but it's settled down.

All good stuff but that private hygienist session should be included in the NHS Band Band 1 £26.80 if it was deemed clinically necessary to maintain your oral health. If you had it for purely cosmetic reasons then it should be private. This little bit of sharp practice crept in when the dentists initially fell out with the Govt over the admittedly ridiculous new NHS contracts.

👍

I’m sure they’ll find a way to deem it unnecessary and put it down to just “good practice”

Tbh, I don’t really mind. Happy to pay £60 a couple of times a year.

As far as my research seems to have turned up, it’s still cheaper than private care. But I am considering looking at a private monthly plan.

Sorry I'm a little confused by your last statement. That £60 hygienist fee was a private charge.

If you've got a good NHS dentist not sure why you would consider a monthly private plan?

It costs £27 something for a check up.
It costs £40 or £60 quid (I forget) for a hygienist appointment.

Both NHS.

Having said that, after looking online I think my normal clean should be included in my £27.

I’ll ask about that. Thanks 🙏

I go to Strand Dental in Worthing. Hygienist appointment was £89 last year ... up from £84 the year before. I'm guessing there will be another increase for my next appointment in May

Best of luck querying that as they will twist and turn.

£27 is dirt cheap these days. I have to go private as there isn't an NHS option locally, and it's at least £50 each for the dentist and hygienist.

Yeap seeing a hygienist is over £80. I'm seeing one next week. Another essential thing that just keeps increasing in price.. It's cheaper getting them cleaned on holiday. I wouldn't get work done though.

Something I learned today if you don't attend an appointment after 1 year they un-register you and you can't even register back with that dentist. Happened to my 7 year old. I wish they would've told me that first. I wonder if that's rule or it's just something that particular NHS dentist's do.

My NHS dentist locally, has a sign in the waiting room, saying patients must have a check up every 6 months. At £26.80 a time it is worth it.

My previous dentist on Portland Road was exactly the same.

My NHS dentist of the last 15 years has recently announced it's going private only for adults, and children will only be kept on as NHS patients (i.e. free) if their parents subscribe to their monthly plan. Luckily it's not actually that expensive, at about £150/year for 1 check and 1 hygienist appointment - not significantly more than present (albeit, being a skinflint with very healthy teeth, I've not been to the hygienist in years, although I know I should).

I'm also there - due to see the hygienist next month. I did look at other local dentists as Strand are not cheap (and I see that when I look at my work dental plan options) but most of them are all fairly similar in basic pricing.

Really? Conditional NHS treatment for kids? That's a bit of sharp practice that I'm not convinced he's allowed to do.

I might be stating the obvious but putting kids on a monthly plan is not free. It might be worth checking this link to see if it can be reported?
