You suggest it needs to get to 20m tall? That is very tall! Look no further than the Sycamore, (Acer pseudoplatanus). Fast growing, and will get tall. Ensure you don't get a variety of it, as they tend to be smaller. A Japanese Maple won't fulfil your criteria.
Sycamore’s are attractive but I fine theyseed all over the garden- my neighbour has one - I’m forever digging up little mimi sycamores - in the lawn and flower beds!

Do you live next door to me?
Neighbours either side kept their bushes (no sniggering at the back) trimmed to about 5 foot, the same as our fences. Come the summer we'd all hang out over the fences swapping beers and putting the world to right.
Then a new neighbour moved in and they've grown a 10 foot hedge around 3 sides of their house, literaly keeping themselves to themselves. Not spoken more than a few times in two years.

Collateral damage. You can't have it all ways! :giggle:

When I saw the title of this thread, I wondered if someone might mention Triffids.

Back in 1981 I was working at a bank as a cashier. One of our customers was actor. Just small parts in the odd TV drama. He was a regular and so we knew him quite well. He mentioned to me one day that he had a part in The Day of the Triffids and that he was in the next episode.

So we watched it. His part lasted barely a minute as he was ‘consumed’ by a triffid outside a house. His lines were easy to learn. It was something like, “ aaaaaggggghhhhhhh” 😂
A mate of my son thought he had a big break in a Netflix production boasting how they had provided him with an assistant and everything. He got killed in about 15 seconds yep that was his role😀

This is embarrassing, I've had something of a moment. My brain has completely failed regarding tree heights. I'm looking in the garden, calculating height in feet, and then switching to metres with no conversion at all  :shootself

My defence is thus: I am also trying to do something else, and I am completely incapable of multitasking. And I'm clearly an idiot.

How tall is your neighbour??
20m (65 ft) is VERY tall. I think 15m should be tall enough (if you like the Rohan otherwise).

It doesn't even need to be 10m!

The most curious thing..
Whatever you get, do NOT repeat NOT plant a Leylandi. They grow really quickly but are f@@@king horrible ugly thugs and impossible to keep manageable.

Fruit trees on the other hand (any variety) are excellent.

You've made a beginner mistake here Jack, and failed to take account of the fact that I was getting everything wrong.

In 5 minutes I'll be saying the soil type is acidic

for screening needs to be evergreen, Shirley? or you'll be screened for only 6 months, not sure if this is accounted for in many suggestions.

I plan to plant a row of exactly those along a boundary. But there’s first the task of removing three other trees and their roots, including a huge Eucalyptus.
They look great, but they are too tidy for me. Which means I would have to prune them almost on a daily basis.

My laburnums are a bit random, and apart from the daddy (which cane from a seed from my dad's garden in 1990) are all self-seeded. I have kept the 6 that grew in places I found pleasing.

Even worse than that for you, my plan is for pleached Limes. I love the look and still have the zeal for the maintenance. One thing though, I don’t know if the Limes will like the long incredibly windy winters up here.

Elsewhere we have the random look with two Hawthorn Paul’s Scatlet, a long natives wildlife hedge, a Yew and a neighbour has overlapping our garden a gorgeous Whitebeam and an ornamental plum.

Removing their roots? That sounds extreme?

I’ve done it before when removing a row of 70’ Leylandii. With some trees it’s the only way to prevent them coming back again and again, and I want the bed entirely cleared for the Limes and other ideas. A fresh start.

Forget the Sycamore. Too big!
