He says everyone's tariff's will be half what their own tariff on US good are. Except he's worked out we charge a 10% tariff - so he's going to impose a 10% tariff (as are others in a similar situation). Not half then. Might as well raise our tariffs (if they exist and aren't just in his imagination) to 20%....

Leaving the EU to pursue a trade deal with the US turning out to be a fantastic idea, well done lads

Are these tariffs that other countries are supposedly putting on US goods fictional?
Think so.

Some trade expert on the radio as we’re driving home has just said current UK tariffs on US imports averages out at 2%, which is pretty much the same as they already charge us.

An accidental by-product, perhaps. But even the government's own economic think tank reckons leaving the EU will/has cost 4% of GDP

As regards tariffs, in fairness, the US government isn't wrong in claiming it was disadvantaged by many countries. That is a cold truth. The problem is what all this now leads to.

Absolutely astounding that Trump has managed to unite the whole world against America/Americans, especially with a lot of the rhetoric he's using in his speeches. Pretty impressive stuff

He said they were tariffs, currency manipulations and other barriers.

Think so.

However, with regard to the UK I think he may actually be right in some instances.

We don't have a trade agreement with the US https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/the-uks-trade-agreements

It's different levels for different items, eg:
  • Cars = 10%
  • Butter = £158 per 100kg

That last sentence shows how little they care about the trauma they’re inflicting on people.
Which is why I want everyone to reciprocate the tariffs. Don’t pussy foot around, if he wants a fight, let’s give him one.

Or someone to just shoot him.

Glad I took a punt selling off quite a bit of US shares earlier today. Nearly 10% down in the after hours market. About 15% from what I sold at

Thing is about the tariffs, it’s your own citizens that pay the increase on goods coming in. If someone could let Donald know I’m sure he’d appreciate it.

the latest tariffs are new round on top of existing ones. for China it'll be 54% total, which given how much US companies import from China, is going to be a bit of a problem for them.

Essentially, yes. They are actually an attack on those country’s trade surplus with the US.

Trump, in his speech last night:

Terminate your own tariffs, drop your barriers, don’t manipulate your currencies, and start buying tens of billions of dollars of American goods.
In Trump’s black-and-white thinking, a country selling more to the US than it buys has “raped” America.
