You clearly have no idea how football transfers work. Why on earth would Lamptey sign a new contract with a few months before it expires, when he's a free agent in the summer?

There are some benefits for the player. Most significantly, it guarantees him another 3-4 years of income regardless of his injury status. I'd imagine that the potential to get a bad injury is at the back of the minds of most players running down their contracts, and this is Tariq Lamptey we're talking about - a player that has missed approx a season and a half worth of games because of injury since he extended his contract in Jan 2021.

I also wonder if he feels any sense of loyalty to the club that has nursed him through this early part of his career, paying for surgery to prevent recurrence of the hamstring issue as well as using him sparingly until fully recovered, all while paying him a PL salary.

That’s unexpected - maybe some breakdown in relationships that is possibly forcing a permanent transfer out - can’t think why it would otherwise be good for squad depth or financially unless it’s for silly money?

Surely we would get far less for an injured, underperforming Ferguson than we would for a fully recovered Ferguson that’s scoring goals after a 6th month successful loan spell?

I know there has been a lot of debate about this but frankly, this is stupid (if it's true). If 2 of Rutter, JP and Welbz get injured we are screwed and where is the future planning. We won't find a striker with such natural finishing ability again in a hurry. I am usual very supportive of the transfer strategy but this one stinks.

I just don't get what's going on here. We've been led to think that any deal would be a loan.

Seems very odd to me that we would entertain the idea of selling, goals seem to be a problem for us. He is under contratc until 2029, I would like to think it would have to be a big fee to tempt us.

Either something is wrong behind the scenes for him to be even considered to be sold, or we think he is more injury prone now? I really hope we have someone else lined up as with the Cashin defender coming in (after looking at higher class defenders) and relying on an injury prone (albeit good) Welbeck who isn't getting any younger, this is turning into a not very good window!

We are 6 points of 6th. I don't think our season is done just yet. Screwed for an out-and-out striker that has natural finishing ability. In fact, he's the only one who is a proper instinctive finisher. I love Welbz but he's not a 15-goal-a-season striker. Ferguson can and will be and if we sell him it will be a bigger mistake than VG.

Not like our only other out and out strikers are, a 34 Year Old who is often injured, a 23 year old who is scoring a goal every now and then for a Ligue 1 side, who we seem intent on never giving a minute of first team football, a 20 year old who while at Portsmouth seems to have spent most of his time in the physio room, a 19 year old who is refusing to sign a new contract, and with the bizarre handling of Ferguson who can blame him. Odd, odd, odd.
