That's disappointing - not just that we are set to miss out on a promising player - but more broadly, that players at this stage of their careers are starting to take up Qatari / Saudi offers.

One thing is for sure - his missus is going to have to invest in some more modest outfits!.

Genuine question, were we ever actually confirmed to be interested? For some reason, I always saw this one as "player and agent make up link with unnamed English club to get a move"

Every transfer is no more than rumours until it isn't. Nobody ever knows for sure who we are looking at, until the club tell us they are.

Every transfer is no more than rumours until it isn't. Nobody ever knows for sure who we are looking at, until the club tell us they are.

Yeah, but there's usually a transition from rumour > semi-reputable source > Naylor/Owen/Romano > club announcement. This one never got out of stage 1.

Although Uruguay isn't the poorest country in South America, the financial opportunity for these players is too good to turn down.

That depends on how good he is/how much potential there is. If he thought he had a chance of making it in a decent league, he's mad to turn that down from a higher salary now. He wouldn't have been making a pittance in the Premier League or La Liga.

Hard to know if there was genuine interest from European clubs but I don't blame these players for taking the guaranteed offer now, rather than waiting and hoping for something else.

His club turned down bids from River Plate and Flamengo before it was reported that Barcelona were interested and his agent met with their directors. The connections with us didn't get beyond the rumour stage but it certainly seemed like he's a hot prospect.

After the initial Barça interest, he said it'd be a dream to play there but he was "calm" and that his agent would find the "best option" for him.

I wonder what he's getting paid in Qatar and what the agent made.

Given that Barcelona are £100m over their FFP salary cap I have a lot of doubts this was real

He would've been on a relatively small amount at Barça.

I think the likes of Felix, Cancelo and Gundo will pose more of a challenge for their accountants.
