We offered him a new contract so that we got £100M for him instead of maybe the £30 or £40M that we'd have got with one year left on his contract (like Bissouma).
The plan we have for one big sale every summer is excellent. Last summer that was obviously World Cup winner Mac (just about a big enough sale if the extra £20M add-ons are viable). I suspect the plan/hope was for Caicedo to do one more season - he was much younger than Mac, so another year before his big move wouldn't have hurt him at all, but unfortunately his agent got into his ear with the idea that dozens of starving little Caicedos in Ecuador desperately needed him to treble or quadruple his wages now, not next season (they'd have all starved to death by then!) - and also convinced him that there were no restaurants or clubs in or around Liverpool and it was inhabited by dangerous cannibals, so Chelsea and no European football was the best option.......
Whatever, he wasn't going to stay - and that's where the plan broke down to an extent. Selling one big player every summer = good, selling two = bad!

I’m not worried about losing the family silver. I’m concerned that the club thought an adequate replacement was James Milner. We needed a decent, not world-beating, PL fullback and midfielder in the summer, but we didn’t do it. Had we done so, different story.
…….but that will be because there were issues with any potential targets (too expensive, didn’t want to come here, didn’t suit RdZ style, failed NDP etc). Milner was never a replacement for Ale or Moises, he was just another experienced utility pro that the club thought would be a useful addition on and off the pitch.

When Caicedo signed the new contract, 99% here thought he’d be an Albion players for years to come. In reality, as some said, it just meant a pay rise and a bigger fee. Boehly, the petro states get what they want, aided by scheming agents who want their own huge pay day now.

Everyone broke out Champagne, Caicedo was ours for years to come. Whilst I was challenged from the very top, my rationale just didn’t make sense.

Kauro - will probably be off, I expect - £50M hopefully, plus a bit. Hopefully Ferguson and his advisers have the sense to realise that staying with us for a season or two until he's 21 or 22 will be the best plan for his career, but if Chelsea or some other big (in their own eyes or otherwise) club takes a fancy to, say, Enciso or Estupinan, we could have to face the same damage to our squad that we've had this summer.Without defending the alleged Scottish rapscallion It seems Evan and Kauro are next out on the conveyor belt
The dilemna then is, of course, that yes we could pay £50 or £60M for a player - but a £50 or £60M player won't sign for our wages. To think, football used to be a simple game ..............!

Caicedo didn’t play a single additional game for us in signing that contract.

Selling one or two of of our best players every year will mean we’ll do well to be in the top ten, which should be the target this year. If we keep Ferguson and Mitoma in the summer and the likes of Adingra and Baleba continue to develop, then maybe top six is achievable again next season. I would be amazed if we qualify for Europe again this season.

I'm not sure why some don't seem to follow the way we do things. At Brighton, we seem to get players to sign a new contract and I'm sure that is with a gentlemen's agreement that they can move with the right offer. I doubt none of the players that have signed longer contracts have done so in the expectation that it will keep them at the club for years to come and I doubt the club think that either. An extended contract gives them a higher salary for the last few months of their time here and increases their value. Surely you all remember the pittance we got for Bissouma which could have been double if he had been on a longer contract!!
A likely 8 clubs qualify.
Bloody hard this season as a load of clubs embarked on vast spending sprees so have deep squads of quality, already they’re all floating to the top and Spuds/Chavs have few midweek games.
We need luck with injuries to give RDZ the tools.
