So whose chainsaw was it? 16 year olds aren't, so far as I am aware, allowed to buy them.

if it was one of the most photographed trees in the world then it would have had hoards of people going there. Its not a leap to think therefore that is is a disgruntled land owner/farmer weas annoyed that his sheep are disturbed/ gates left open/ litter etc.

I don't think Columbo will need to be called in on this one.
Dumb speculation. Sycamore Gap is at Hadrian's Wall and on the Pennine Way , part of a defined official footpath, and brings money into the local economy.

I do wonder what goes through someones mind to think 'I know I'm going to chainsaw that big tree that's in the middle of no-where', yes I know it's not the middle of no-where but it's the equivalent of me going up to Ditchling Beacon to cut down a tree. It's not an easy task cutting down a tree so there's no chance he was on his own. It's just so random. 🤷‍♀️

Having worked for the National Park - I can quite honestly say I’m utterly and completely f***ed off by this mindless act… the only bit of good news is that they’ve apprehended one of the culprits…

I hate humanity sometimes.

I've cut down trees that sort of size on my own, and after carrying the chainsaw some distance - but I did have a bloody great bar, probably something like 16-20". Looking at that, it's someone who knows exactly what they are doing though - they've got the mouth size right (the wedge you take out on the side it's going to fall), and looking at the lines made by the saw on the felled tree - they have gone through quite smoothly, and neatly - and with a very clean fall looking at the tear. It also looks as though there is paint/chalk on the stump - unless that's something to do with the investigation.

I would say that's been done by a professional, or at least someone who is experienced in handling a saw and felling large trees. I would be very surprised if it's a 16-year old, unless from a farming or silviculture background.
