I'm not generally a fan of war films. I've watched a lot of the ones that make it into top films lists, imdb top 250, etc. But generally struggle with them.

I've found the ones I enjoy most tend to be from 'the other side'. So for me it's probably Das Boot. I did like the recent version of All Quiet on the Western Front.

A few I’ve enjoyed;

The Seventh Soldier

Platoon

The Longest Day

Saving Private Ryan

Jarheads

Brothers
(with Jake Gylenhal and Spider Man) the scene where he loses his shit over what he’s done is heartbreaking) great cast too.

Three Kings

Casablanca

MASH

There’s many more but those are ones that I remember liking a lot.

I read your post as sarcastically dismissing Aliens as a war film.
If I was wrong, sorry.

Well no I didn't mean to dismiss it, but since we're including it, I think it's fair to include Star Wars.

I'd tend to file Star Wars under something like "Adventure", it's more a generic Hero's Journey type story/film than a "war film".
But that's perhaps excessively genre-ist. Referring to the comment about the dogfights in The Battle of Britain above, I understand a lot of the shots in the climactic Death Star battle are taken straight from The Battle of Britain and other war films.

Before they added the special effects, they used the bombing raid footage from Dam Busters in place of the Death Star climactic sequence to show test audiences.

Fact fans.

Sophie Scholl (every time you watch it you think the ending will be different, a testament to the performances)

Flame and Citroën (Mads Mikkelson at the top of his game). Watched that Danish resistance film so many times.

Ahthropoid (assassination of Heydrich)

Valkyrie.

Son of Saul (takes you inside the gas chambers like no other film has)

Brothers is always a top shout @The Clamp. A Yank remake of the Danish original, and imho superior to the Danish version. Stunning performance from Toby Maguire.

Yes 'War film' isn't the first genre you'd put SW in, but then it's not for Aliens either.

Cool, didn't know that.
