On Sunday we were 6th and aside from Villa scoring more than a dozen goals in their last game seemed to have qualified for the Europe Conference.

Last night we got one point but stayed 6th, and now have qualified for the Europa league

Sorry but I cant get a grip of this. :)

6th qualifies us for Europa League
7th qualifies us for Europa Conference

If we lost the match versus Man City, a heavy defeat to Villa may have seen us drop to 7th.

Avoiding defeat against Man City means that Villa can no longer overhaul us.

On top of that 6th doesn't always qualify you for Europa League but it does this season because both Man City and Man UTD play each other in the FA Cup final, both of whom have qualified for the Champions League. So the Europa place you get for winning the FA Cup has been allocated to 6th in the league instead.

It wasn’t mathmatical that we would stay 6th on Sunday as Villa could catch us on GD. Now they can’t so 6th is absolutely confirmed now.

The actual breakdown for Europe is this:
Premier League places:
1 - 4 = Champions League
5 = Europa League
Cup Winners
FA Cup = Europa League
League Cup = Europa Conference

The cup places go to the next league position if the cup winner has already qualified through league position.

It’s not often happened but if the cups were won by sides outside the top 5, then only the top 5 by league position would qualify for Europe.

Am I right in think 5th and 6th are both Europa League? So would there have been any benefit regarding Europe if we’d finished 5th (I know there is more PL money for it) ? How does the seeding work? Will Liverpool be seeded but not us or are neither or both seeded?

Sorry but I am a European virgin :lolol:

No benefit at all really. Seeding is done on European Coefficient which we have very little of and therefore are seeded in Group 3 of 1-4. The seeded groups are in one of the Europa League threads!

Yes, we were already there unless we took an absolute, and very unlikely, hammering...........

I'll explain it to you in BHA terms:

Beating Southampton was like the final whistle v Wigan when all invaded the pitch celebrating promotion;
Getting a point v City was like when Huddersfield drew with Derby a couple of hours later and we all celebrated again.

Didn't think United had qualified for the Champions League yet. They need another point.

Liverpool and Man Utd could swap places, but that would just put United in the Europa on league position, so the FA Cup place still goes to the 6th place finisher.

Pick any non-English team from POT 1 and one from POT2 and it's impossible not be excited.

Ajax and Marseille!

Roma and PSV!

Atalanta (RDZ's rivals) and Olympiakos!

Come on Sept 1 - hurry up!!!

Even Pot 4 has some goodies: Antwerp and Freiburg are very accessible

Cheapest flight to Minsk (closest airport to Bate Borisov) in September is already about £1500 and only via Dubai it seems :laugh:
