Take good care of yourself Durlston.

Want to take some positives from it all?
1. You weren't driving a convertible. If you had been, the ending may have been different.
2. It's highly unlikely to happen to you again, as you will be more alert to that particular danger. I'm alert to the danger of falling asleep at the wheel and having a head on crash.
3. Life is short. Why not take the opportunity to reassess your priorities in life? Perhaps do something you've always wanted to do?

Good luck and thanks for sharing it with us.

Brighton factually.....
Escapism worked for me after my accident (motorbike) someone was most definitely looking out for me that day , i found watching films a way to distract my mind , sci-fi fantasy just anything that took my mind somewhere else . If you were given valium or similar follow the instructions to the letter , but in general try to be with someone at all times , and try and fill your time with things that make you happy . It can be a tough road , but you have a lot of friends to turn to , all the best . (y)
Yes indeed, escapism......

Not my route though alcohol and blocking it out, glad your ok Durlston.
I and my friend were both taken out by a drunk driver on the wrong side of the road, as we left our scooter club meeting in Ormskirk riding back to Wigan, luckily for me I was behind my friend Jason, who sadly got hit first as the driver in his capri came hurtling round the corner, straight into him, throwing him from his scooter, the driver did not even brake, but the impact of his first collision slowed him down somewhat and by the time he hit me, I had time to swerve throwing me from my scooter, and my head hit his wheel arch and my elbow ripped his bumper off somehow.
My friend did not survive he was dead on the scene.

I still have flash backs and think of him often, along with another friend who died on his way back to France in exactly the same scenario, killed by a drunk driver on the wrong side of the road just 2 miles from his home.

I would love a scooter again, but there are too many idiots in cars that just do not think bike.

To be honest, anyone with a different opinion to yours is a twat. Borrow GBs mirror..
Taking the piss is one thing, taking the piss of someone who has had a nasty accident is quite another. just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Glad you’re ok, one of my blokes at work ended up on his roof on the a23 last summer on his way to work. Really shook him up but he’s now almost recovered. Cars can be replaced, people not.

This is a still of the video from the dashcam of the car that pulled out in front of him….

Take time to rest and recover, especially mentally.

For those who don’t understand physics or assume you must be excessively speeding to roll a car - I’ll inform you that it can be done from as low as 10mph.
Most likely front quarter collided with a parked car or high curb, in combination with a quick turn on the steering wheel can roll you. It’s not too rare.

Source: worked in motor vehicle accidents and claims for >10 years.
Exactly.

A car rolled near the Palace Pier a couple of years ago. It was driving well below the speed limit, but with its trajectory and catching a kerb, it rolled.

About 20 years ago I lived in Reading. After an Albion night game at Withdean, I was driving back home around a fairly empty M25. Raining solidly. As it always did in the Withdean days.

My car was rear wheel drive. I hit a patch of standing water at about 75mph, and the front just went. I started to spin. “Steer into it, steer into it,” my brain said. So I did.

Ending up doing 3 complete 360s while barrelling along the middle lane. I distinctly remember seeing the central reservation wall come round and round again, and thinking “I’ve not hit it yet, and I’m bloody well not going to hit it this time either,” so kept the steering wheel turned into the spin.

Will never consider a rear wheel drive car, ever again.

Forgot to say that I am glad you are OK.

Just remembered my other very scary incident. I was merging motorways 3 lanes to my right and 2 to my left all funnelling into probably 4 lanes. All at 60-70 mph. At that point I had a catastrophic engine failure - it just switched off with no warning. Of all the places to choose to do it. So the car suddenly started to lose speed with no electrics to power break lights etc. Luckily the ignition restarted the stopped engine while in motion, but very, very scary and the other drivers no doubt cursed and flicked v-signs at me - but I was concentrating on more serious matters.

Anyhow, glad you are OK.

Dual carriageway Head on. 80mph. 1 in a literal million I and other driver survived according to Police. Other driver prosecuted (fell asleep at wheel). 3 months in hospital. 12 months headaches. Broken breastbone, wheelchair etc. 30 odd years ago now. Should have died. Still remember the smell of perrol, and the absolute panic / fear I had of car burning me alive inside. Somehow managed to crawl from wreckage. Must then passed out temporarily. Then police, fire engines and Ambulances arrived, remember journey to hospital, proper Holby City type rush to Cuckfield, doors flung open, team waiting, into theatre etc. I was an extremely lucky boy. 6 dead on same stretch just 3 weeks before.

Ps the flashbacks never go. But the accompanying anxiety does. You’ll be fine. You’ve had a hell of a shock. You’d be abnormal not to feel the way you are now but it will ease. Time. Give it time.

Glad you're OK and hope those flashbacks start to abate very soon. Just before Christmas in 1995 I was turning left onto a slip road of the A27 when I hit black ice, carried on straight instead of turning, hit a kerb, blew a tyre, and turned the car on it's side in a ploughed field. I was fine but the car was a write-off with a knackered sub-frame. In time the flashbacks stopped and I'm sure they will for you. Take care and stay safe in future.

Firstly, glad to hear nobody was seriously injured ...

I've had more than my fair share of incidents ranging from passenger in a rolled car outside the old Radio Brighton Office to rolling my own car into a field on the run down from Ditchling Beacon to Old Boat Corner - both were no other vehicle involved and no serious injury but I did not get out of either vehicle the same way [door] I got in.

Some will know I used to race motorcycles in my earlier life and I've had many a high-speed "off" on the track - but tracks are much safer than roads. I've also had multiple unplanned dismounts on the roads of Sussex [Old Steine on diesel, wet leaves round The Level, etc.].

It never ceases to surprise me how luck plays such an important role. I crashed at over 120 MPH at Hawthorns corner [Brands Hatch] and pretty much walked away with just a few friction burns [through the leathers] - I was VERY lucky. Yet a really good racer-mate of mine died in Horsham after a low speed impact with a car - he broke his neck and died from organ failure 5 days later [very unlucky]. RIP Robin.

Had a similar experience on the M23 northbound a few years back. In lane 3 doing about 70ish when the engine cut completely. Found out later the hose had come off the turbo. Managed to coast across two lanes on to the hard shoulder, thankfully squeezing between two lorries on the inside lane. Not quite sure how I got through the gap and very, very glad it wasn't the dumb 'smart' motorway they've now installed.

Also, had a people carrier roll in front of me on the M3 once after its rear tyre blew out. That flipped about 4 times and again, somehow, rolled between the lorries on the inside lane. Finished upside down with a couple climbing out of the tailgate and 2 in the front trapped. Tried to keep them alert and talking before the ambulance and police arrived. Was pleased to pull away but then needed to stop for a few minutes myself a bit further on when the shock kicked in a bit!

It's amazing how dangerous standing water is when traveling at speed. If you haven't experienced it you probably think there will just be a large splash as you drive through the water and nothing else. But on a main road you can easily be bounced into the next lane, either to the left or right. If you are lucky there are no vehicles in the other lanes or coming towards you, and you can get the vehicle back under control if you don't panic.
Once you have experienced this most people will reduce their speed in wet conditions particularly at night, where you may not see the standing water.
Feels like hitting a wall.
