I'm pretty sure one to one, or with small groups like a squad of players, is the only context in which this means anything.

I've not been paying a great deal of attention, but looking at the list of articles in the Guardian you only have to go back 2weeks to find columns raving about how he's reinvigorated the changing room in his promising start.
Since when they've lost to 2 of the best teams in the division and qualified for the knockouts in Europe at the top of their group. I'd take that kind of struggling.
Amusingly, I came across an article from a couple of days before our game against them going on about how exciting his use of Sterling as a wing back was, and how they'd probably not be as open against us as they were against Salzburg
Based on that article I suspect Potter's main failing is not being able to use his master's degree to strap Reece James' knee enough for him to take the field.

The other thing I wonder about this, is that whilst the OU degree might not be some globally recognised award, he's still got a damned more training in the subject than practically any other football manager. Of course that doesn't mean he's naturally good, or the best at it, but still I think it's worth noting.

Just had to try not to alienate a fan base of thousands, in reacting to a few hundred booing.
Try to show you understand why there is some dissatisfaction or frustration, rather than tell people they have no right to have any. Then you can tell them that it is not helpful or fair to express that in certain ways if you want to, but you don't take people with you by telling them their feelings are not valid.

Might be this one, which I read beforehand and, it's worth noting, the nominal wing-backs played extremely advanced up the pitch and wide (stretching it), which was more akin to a winger. Liverpool do this a lot. As Steinberg indicates, it's also how we played for most the time of our great run of form under GP from cMarch-Sep22, with Tross and March in that role. Formation-wise, I think this is best captured by 3313.

He alienated thousands of people by leaving. Before he did that barely anybody cared about his response to the original booing. After he left nobody's opinion was going to be altered by anything he said, and he doesn't have any reason to care.

I tuned into Talksport today for the first time in years and they were discussing Townsends opinion that Potter doesn’t show enough emotion…. To be fair Jordan and whoever else decided that if Paisley and Shankly didn’t feel the need to run up and down the touch line then it didn’t matter

Potter was clearly very thin skinned though, as was evidenced during his time here (history lessons, don't shout shoot etc)

I can't remember the 'don't shout shoot' one, but I have to say I mostly agree. There certainly was one game recently where the players were definitely overplaying it more than a couple of times, and the crowd reminding them they are allowed to shoot felt pretty reasonable, but I hear people shouting shoot when players are still 30 yards out (doesn't apply to Ally Mac who'd probably bury it) and I think that does cause problems. Tension can build in the crowd and pass to the players, who are better placed to decide when the right time to shoot is.

If Potter was telling people to stop, that seems like a good idea, rather than evidence of thin skin (like his history moment)

Potter ended his time with us shaking his fist at away ends and the North Stand thoroughly enjoying victories with the fans. The players by all accounts loved him. Pep refused to shake his hand once when he over celebrated a goal contrary to this idea that he was a cold fish.

Now we hear the fans all thought he was aloof and snide and patronising. Come off it. Some will never get over the manner of his departure and quite right too but this thread is rewriting history at dizzying speed - this inverse snobbery about his degree of all things is laughable. Lets also be careful - this idea that RDZ (what’s not to like but let’s wait and see) after 7 games is everything he’s not . A bit premature to say the least

He’s going to be subject to a level of scrutiny he’s simply never experienced………the media top 6 obsession needs constantly feeding…….if the results don’t come he’s going to get an awful lot more of this kind of thing. Big test.
