Bollocks. There would be plenty - just all those nations who aren't supplying rockets to kill civilian targets in Ukraine.

If you can't see the obvious reason, there really is no hope for your logical facilities. Think about it - you really can't think of a reason why it should be Ukraine? Sreiously?

Wow!
I agree with you. Swanny has turned into PotG and JCFG, by saying they (a different 'they' but a 'they' all the same) are all as bad as each other. They ain't

Well....BAE Systems have sold Saudi Arabia circa £15bn worth of arms over the last 5 years while they bomb the f*** out of Yemen. That would presumably rule England and Wales out.

And having failed to qualify, I don't really see why Ukraine should receive (or want) a free pass to the World Cup.

Basing qualification for tournaments on geopolitics could lead to some very complex scruples being applied to a lot of nations.

1. So thats the only atrocity on the planet?
2. No I can't think of a reason.

The absurdity of this World Cup has only just begun in my opinion. It was awarded in 2010, which whilst only 12 years ago, is almost light years away from where we are culturally, in the western world at least, now.

Yesterday we had foreign secretary James Cleverley not very cleverly advising gay fans to be a little bit less gay, or words to that effect, should they wish to travel to Qatar. In these times, making such comments about how the LBGTQ community should conduct themselves on these shores would almost be a sackable offence, but I’m not sure what else can he say?

Advising fans to be themselves, only to find they end up getting locked up in their droves for up to 7 years, or even getting the death penalty should they have the audacity to be both gay and Muslim, is not an approach the government can take.

The decision to award Qatar the World Cup looked spectacularly moronic and corrupt in 2010, and it has only aged like milk since then as the values of most of the world has moved on while those in the Persian Gulf remain firmly in the Stone Age. Oh, and I’m not sure what feelings about the deaths of thousands of forced, migrant workers were in 2010, but I think it was least a little bit “uncool”.

Will I watch it? I honestly don’t know. I had similar if less strong feelings about the World Cup in Russia in 2018, only to find it quite enjoyable after they seemingly locked up all their meatheads for a month or at least paid them to keep out of the way. However successful that tournament was, the Russians have of course only showed themselves for what they truly are in the time since.

Two countries world renowned for their own unique brand of barbarism. Spin things how you like, the hosting of the World Cup in such countries has nothing about enlightenment or spreading the love of the beautiful game, it’s about money, corruption and the placating of profoundly evil and archaic regimes.

Actually, fúck it, I think I’ve convinced myself. I won’t be bothering with this shambolic circus of a tournament. The times we are living through are a reminder that there are more important things in life than football; values are possibly more important than ever right now.

I am enjoying the double standards of companies in all of this.

Virgin sponsor attitude awards, have a gender fluid uniform policy etc etc

Picked up the contract to fly Wales to Qatar

Wonder if there'll be any response from FIFA to the suggestion of kicking Iran out as an ally of Russia, and allowing Ukraine to take their place. Cant see them doing anything so decent myself (unless there's a lot of brown envelopes in it, which presumably there aren't). Fully in favour myself.

Why would they replace Iran with Ukraine? why would it not be UAE or Peru who lost out to Iran and the play offs in that section

Seriously? You do know why Russia is banned? Iran has joined Russia by supplying bombs to destroy Ukraine. Attacking Ukraine is the clue (and replacing Iran with Ukraine has already been suggested).
Doubtless many Russians will be watching the world cup - and it might make them wonder how it is that their allies have also been replaced in the WC by Ukraine.

Why are you ignoring the U.K. selling arms to the Saudis to bomb Yemen? What’s different between that and Iran supplying drones to Russia? It’s been highlighted to you at least twice in this thread now.

And it’s virtue signalling nonsense to suggest Ukraine should replace Iran otherwise we’ve lost all sense of sporting merit.

I do, I am pretty sure most people do unless they have been living under a rock.

Fine, ban Iran, however that doesn't answer the question as why Ukraine should replace an Asian teams place in the world cup.

It took longer than expected, but it was predictable that calls for Ukraine should be included have come.

Great post chap. And another example of why NSC can, on occasion, showcase some of the most thoughtful and cerebral commentary on events you will read anywhere. I agree with every word - except for the fact that I will be too weak to resist watching the damn thing.

Anyway. You can say f*** on here now. Don't worry about disguising it.

The age old issue of world politics, are you simply in or are you out? Are you in a just a bit or a lot? Are you in on this bit but not that bit? Not a simple decision. I didn't agree with Russia getting the WC nor China the Olympics but I watched both. Qatar should never have been given it but I like watching football and a bet ...... so I know I will. Could it ever be a "great World Cup tournament?" Never, ever, regardless of what happens. I sincerely hope we don't win this one, would rather never win it again thanks. There's some potential for sexual identity shenanigans to hopefully wind a few people up (yes why not players kissing or hand holding when celebrating a goal?). So yeah I'll watch it. If the Albion were ever taken over by Qataris I would walk away from the club though. As for the video, nice touch but a bit pointless.

That’s f***ing great news, thanks (although I’ve been writing on forums that way for so long my phone actually autocorrects it to the diacritic version, so it’s not quite the liberation it should be).

On watching the World Cup, my thought process did genuinely shift as I was writing that post. It took me back to the 2019 election when, having voted Conservative all my adult life, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I could have no idea what the next three years might look like, but it just didn’t feel right at the time to do so and sometimes you have to go with your gut feel.

It’s a decision I’ll inevitably revisit between now and a months’ time. Of course, it’s easy enough giving England v Iran a miss in the group stage, but a much trickier test of your principles should we find ourselves facing Germany in the final.

But it is, clearly, consequentially the wrong place to be hosting a World Cup at this time. Just as Russia was.

Few countries capable of hosting such an event are entirely free from scandal, but Qatar (and Russia) are almost the shortest of the dwarves.

If we ban ourselves, maybe Ukraine can take our spot?
And then we'll be less tempted to watch it.
Everybody's a winner.
Not sure who'll take Wales' spot. Somebody deserving and inoffensive.

Yeah... and then the US next time. Only really China missing now... will happen at some point.

You can give legitimacy to Russia and US though. They like football and shit, its not implausible to have a World Cup in those nations. Qatar however... rarely if ever was corruption as visible.
