Leicester is my home town. I got out as soon as I could. The city is pretty divided, though not on the level as some others in NW like Blackburn etc. Very large Hindu population, mainly of Indian and East African origin. My 6th form college had five? common rooms, I used to hang out in the smokers common room (!), though back then there were largely Hindu and largely Muslim common rooms. Integration between Hindu/Sikh and white population is now good, with many mixed marriages. Not so back in the day when my Sikh gf had to keep me v quiet or her brothers would have targeted me with violence/threats of it.

Integration between Muslim population and rest of city less evident, and probably getting more distant, as many Muslim youth are now more conservative and religious than their parents. I did not see much reporting of these disturbances on news, until v recently, though the nation's attentions were elsewhere... reports are out there. Guess sparked by cricket and probably actions of Modi, the right wing Hindu nationalist Indian PM, who is anti-Muslim.

Apologies if fixtures, but anyone else heard about nightly violence in Leicester between large gangs of Indian and Pakistani youths?

Just been talking to someone who claims there is some kind of press blackout in operation at the moment, partly as the nation was in mourning for the Queen and also because of the severity of the situation.

Don't listen to her but apparently Julia Hartley Brewer on Talk Radio is the only mainstream media figure whose even touched on the situation.

you again ???

What I find a bit odd, is that the OP has a side-hustle in the media…..yet did not carry out the very simplest of due-diligence to check his source before starting this thread. All he had to do was literally type just the single word Leicester into Google to see all the main news outlets are carrying this story…and in turn find out his source was talking rubbish.

The media are typically very coy with race related issues. Lots of euphemisms in the articles and news I’ve consumed, “tensions”, “disorder”, “disagreements”. These are hate crimes taking place between two groups of people who don’t like each other very much.

Watching the “actual” story via third party news sources such as Twitter gives the fuller picture - as it usually does - that the MSM can’t/won’t report.

There have been some absolutely shocking scenes of violence, rioting and looting which are quite apart from any cultural clashes. Business owners who have nothing to do with their cultures are having property damage, being robbed and assaulted because of this “cultural clash”.

It’s time to call a spade a spade and stop fannying about.

I saw it on the BBC news last week Harty. Mainstream enough for you ?
What do you want to know about it ?

I think Lenny's point is it not getting quite as much front end coverage as you would expect given the magnitude of the issue. Much of that though is down to the full coverage of the Queen though plus I suspect they are responsibly trying not to inflame things further. Last thing we need across our major cities is a Muslim v Hindu conflict. Shame they didn't take the same responsible approach when creating the petrol crisis!

Hardly. Ukraine isn’t getting the coverage it deserves because of this bloody Royal nonsense. And Ukraine matters a damn sight more than Leicester in my opinion.

Sorry old boy I’ve been busy at work and whilst I’ve been watching a lot of the news I hadn’t seen this really covered.

As you will recall my media career was very much a hobby still is, so if I’ve offended or upset you, to reiterate I apologise.

Not offended in the slightest, bemused is the word I'd use. And my point is not the fact you had not seen this on the news....more that it could not have been any easier to fact check before starting this thread. You did a similar thing with your claim Bristol zoo was closing down.

It can be on any subject, I reckon the Mods keep an eye out for personal attacks, wherever they come from.

I agree that it can be on any subject as so many threads get hijacked by those that want to find an angle to push their political bias.

I have no idea who I'd vote for if there was an election tomorrow. Some of my views would be considered slightly to the left and some slightly to the right. I detest those with such an extreme view that you can never have a sensible debate ... on politics, gender and other subjects.

I just get the feeling that more of the barbed targeting of comments come from those on the left ... maybe reflecting the overall make up of board contributors.

Just my view anyway ...
