I have an SLK 250 AMG. As far as first cars go, I think I've done alright. 2013, it's done 92k, cost me a little over £9k.
Obviously I have nothing to compare it to, but it drives beautifully, I have it in eco mode and I'm getting about 37 to the gallon. I have a box fitted so I haven't felt the need to put it in sports mode really, I've tried it and it's way too brutal for someone as inexperienced as me and almost encourages speeding, I'd imagine it destroys the fuel economy too.
I don't have kids and it's mainly for commuting and going out with the Mrs so I didn't need anything practical, but I absolutely love it, and going for a mosey with the roof down is amazing.

Don't agree, I had a Toyota Celica GT (import) in bright yellow, loved it.
And I replaced it with my first brand new car,
Seat Leon 2.0 TFSI FR Turbo (Golf GTI in a Spanish dress), in Seat Racing Yellow, and I loved that as well.

Was VW owner/driver for 15 years but 3 years ago wanted something a bit nicer in the small SUV range.
Looked at KIA sport, Porsche & Jag options were too pricey, so too was the Audi Q5 - then someone said to take a look at the Volvo XC60
Did a test drive and loved it - we would probably have preferred the slightly smaller XC40 but they were still quite new to the range so above our budget.
We paid £15k for a 65 plate [4 years old at the time] with 34k on the clock - love it, but next car will be an automatic now as I'm over 60 and classified as old fogey

I’d like to upgrade to a Hyundai, this one in fact:
Clearly based on a Delorean, sadly it’s only a concept car currently, not that I’d ever be able to afford one!
Looking at a Kia Sportage hybrid for my next car in a few years time.

14 reg., so eight years old. Four years old when I bought it. Worst cllutch I've ever experienced - no 'feel' to it at all. I've owned more than 20 cars - most of them old, as that was all I could afford, and driven dozens more - everything from motorbikes to HGVs. Never had any trouble with a clutch before!

I was offered some advice on buying a classic sports car some years ago.
The time between you being able to afford one and still being able to get in and out of it is always decreasing

Normally I’d agree with you but this looks lovely, for an SUV. Not my car, orders open in a month or so.

I’m boring and seek reliability above all else. My 2002 VW Polo(bought in 04), has now done 205k trouble free miles - have also had two very good Hondas so for me Germany and Japan would always be my options of choice

I currently drive a Hyundai- best car I’ve driven and economical. Never given me a minutes problem (cue fan belt breaking)

I traded in my boy racer Golf GTi nearly 5 years ago for an 'old man's car'. Well, what I mean is a larger family car that wouldn't trigger me to drive like a tit. Mrs T did all the research. Price, testamonials....we whittled it down to a Peugot 3008, Skoda Kodiaq and Renailt Kajjar
I test drove each. The Peugot is a lovely car but there were too many buttons and features. I didn't want the starship enterprise, a car that parks itself, and video cameras. And its safety features meant I'd be tempted to drive like a tit again.
The Kodiaq was nice enough but a bit tatty, and I didn't like the sales staff.
The Kajjar is a pretty car. It has cruise control and speed limiter (features I have never used) and lots or radar sensors (which are a great help for parking in a hurry. It is a deisel
eek automatic drool, but it does over 50 MPG with me at the wheel, and the annual road tax is something like a tenner (I was paying close to £300 for my golf).
I found one that was a year old. So far the car hasn't let me down. Oh, and it has a Bose sound system (which is perfect for my iPOD on random play - my music must be bespoke). The seats are leather ( a must for me). And the price was reasonable. Good, in fact. Same as what I paid for my GTi ten years earlier (it too was a year old).
So, the usual rules apply. How much do you want to spend, and what are the entry levels of spec. Then ask someone else to spend a day or so doing the reseach

My next car, which I will buy in 5 years (breathing permissions permitting) will be all electric. The prices are coming down and the recharging availability is going up, and in 5 years it will be possible to get the equivalent of a Samsung A10 (my first smart phone, second hand, low cost, high spec, perfect for a dodderer), in electric car. Perhaps this is the case already (I'm not looking yet) so if others are directing you to a decent electric this trumps my advice

Ah, Mrs Jakarta's Car, I have downsized from a BMW330D Touring to a sensible A250e Hybrid as I now don't do the silly miles I used to for work.
SLK is a much harder drive compared to the A250 but roof down, sunny day and the A272 to Petersfield is some combination

Personally I don't regard a maximum of 37-38mpg as very economical, especially when to achieve that you have to drive very gently, treating the accelerator pedal as if it was made of cornflakes! Hyundai i10 - horrid little car!
I haven’t owned an MGA, but did have an MGC Roadster a few years ago, but only as a fun car.
You’ll pay quite a bit for an MGA , but they are lovely looking cars.
Join the clubs…..MG Owners Club and the MG Car Club.Lots of useful info, meet ups, discounts etc. and most important of all, sound advice.
