I guess that's the achilles heel of any academy system. It's shining lights are always at risk, from the viewpoint of the academy, of being lured away with promises of greater riches elsewhere. And any compensation only goes partway to compensating for the loss to the parent club that nurtured that talent

Surely this is no different to us benefitting from Tariq Lamptey leaving the Chelsea academy*, or e.g. Jadon Sancho's move from Man City to Dortmund, except this time it's likely there'll be LESS chance of first team action in the new club...!




*albeit in Lamps' case, we paid a nominal fee to sign him in January, rather than waiting for his contract to expire in the summer, as seems to be happening here.

The pathway to a midfield place in the Albion team looks like a potentially rocky road. Leaving aside Biss (who presumably wil be gone) and Gross and Lallana who will likely be playing less (and not forgetting established under 23s like Leonard, Jenks, Spong, etc.) next season we'll be having Mac Allister, Moder, Mwepu, Alzate, Caicedo and possibly Kozlowski fighting over two or three midfield places.
Nice to be well-stocked - but we'll need to be careful we don't lose full internationals like Alzate and Mac if they don't feel they're getting enough game time.

True mate. Also Weir and Moran are two the others who will be hoping to fill these spots in due course, (and i'm guessing that i've forgotten at least 2 or 3 others).

We can't get stressed about young players leaving is the point i'm making. There can't be spots for all of them

That it's a feather in the cap of the academy that one of the players they've produced has attracted the attention of the club which has the most prestigious academy and with a reputation for attracting players from all over the country (and likely globe, I can't say I keep up) and they've snapped them up after the work we've done with him.

I'm clearly not saying "our academy is better than their academy", hence why I used the phrase "one of". Which usually refers to one rather than, for example, all.

In which case, I completely misread and misunderstood your post and I apologise. I completely agree with your assessment - I think it's an excellent sign that our academy is starting to reap real rewards. Hopefully before too much longer we start seeing our players regularly in England under 21 (or 23?) squads and then more regularly making breakthroughs into our squad. I'm very encouraged by our future.

From one Worthing boy to another i read this with a heavy heart. If he's as good as they think he is will we now ever get to see a Worthing born lad play for the Albion what with talent now being sauced globally.

Hopefully things go well for him (is my opinion as a human, as a football fan I generally think it is distasteful not to show more loyalty to the club bringing you up) but its not a move I would recommend to any youth player. I've met a fair share of former academy players in big teams from the big leagues and generally speaking they are treated poorly and seen as expendable as there is always a dozen other really talented players in those teams. Its not a fun environment and your chances of success doesnt increase all that much going from one very good academy to a very very good one.

I’m surprised that a lad is his position has chosen to go there though. Must be more prospect of breaking into our team than theirs and I doubt the money difference is huge at this stage of his career. Would say the same for a player at Palace or Soton etc if they joined a Utd, City or Chelsea.

Dazzled by the Big City Bright Lights. As other posters have said, more than likely he'll get swallowed up and spat out and never play for the ManUre, purely statistically speaking.

You never know, he could still make his way back here in the future if he doesn't make there.

Except for the queue ahead of him at present for a midfield place - at present it's almost in double figures! The chances of him breaking through at either are very slim. Personally, I'd assume he's banking on being more likely to get chances because of his "former Man Utd" status than if he had "only" come through our academy. I think the perception around our academy has already changed and is now very strong, but I don't think there will ever come a time that players coming out of Man Utd won't be fashionable and won't be given more chances than most to succeed.
