Strong second day from the Brits after Cam Norrie went out yesterday.

Murray, Raducanu, Evans and Watson all through to the second round.

Raducanu has lost her first ever set in Grand Slam tennis. Gutting. Let’s see how she recovers in the next round.

Not quite. Today was the first time she's had to play a deciding set, but she also lost the first set at Wimbledon in the match she retired from with the medical issue.

Particularly strong result for Evans against Goffin.

See Broady lost to Kyrgios, thus maintaining a healthy run of English sportsmen getting beaten by Australians in Australia this winter.

David Goffin has barely played in the last 6 months due to a knee injury, I'm pretty sure he said that he was only playing this tournament for the minutes on court but also to defend ranking points and earnings. He was a plum draw for anyone really.

Emma Raducanu did brilliantly to keep her head, Sloane Stephens played that second set at the level she had when she won the US Open a few years ago. For Emma to stay in the game, not get overwhelmed and then come storming back in the final set shows real maturity, confidence and ability. She's the real deal.

Like most Brits I love the tennis and particularly the grand slams. Great to see such a strong day for the Brits, certainly a bit of feel good factor we all need in deepest January.

Emma Raducanu crashes out of the Australian Open in the second round.

Beaten by a player from Montenegro, ranked 99th in the world. I'm just starting to wonder now if she'll always be a one tournament wonder and disappear into the wilderness.

Maybe just too much, too young? Prove me wrong at the French Open or Wimbledon, Emma, and Sports Personality of the year? That was curious why she won it when nobody had heard of her for the first six months. ???

Wouldn't read too much into it - she played with a massive blister on the palm of her main hand. Listening to the BBC commentary this morning, they actually had high praise for the way she was intelligently playing around the problem - but pointed out that in the end she simply couldn't get any power into what would normally be her main weapon for winning games and her opponent was able to exploit the gaps in her game that the injury created.

Fair point.

It was restricting her and I don't think she made any excuses for it. British media really do build up any young talent in any sport.

Wish I'd put money on her opponent! I saw around 4/1 in a two horse race.

I saw about 40 minutes of the match, she did well to hang in there for so long as her right hand was clearly a huge issue.

All she could do on forehand was try and spin it back, no power at all.

There was a moment when she actually made a forehand winner, and both players laughed out loud, as it was basically the only one she’d managed all match - and a bit of comic light relief for everyone.

Didn't get to watch any, but listened via BBC Sport. From memory it was deep in the second set / early third set, she went through a period where she started playing a few more topspin forehands and seemed to be getting the upper hand - but I suspect that took a toll on the blister and was the root of her tailing off towards the end. Sounded like she fought it out as best she could and never gave up.

From the sounds of the blister, I suspect she may not have played round 3 anyway even if she had won - or if she did, she would have been hampered even more and likely retired before it ran duration.

Yeah she said some members of her team didn't want her to play this match even so credit to her for playing through it. You could tell her serves were slower than usual too.

Regardless of injuries anyway - we need to give her time. It's impressive enough that she's competing in grand slam matches at the age of 19. Obviously the US Open was fantastic, but if she doesn't win another slam for the next 2-3 years she still has a fantastic future ahead of her. We can't just expect her to win, or even be in the latter rounds, in every tournament she plays in just yet.

I said on here at one point or another that I was worried she'd be another Bouchard. Have a fast start and then get her head turned by the fame. I think there was enough in her performance today to differentiate her from Genie, she has a lot in her game (albeit quite forced with her injury) and can play tactically and not just rely on her power and shotmaking. I think she's got a real career ahead of her, she just needs to play more. I think she'll be one to watch at Wimbledon.

Wimbledon 2021 - retired following first set loss after suffering panic attacks/heart palpitations after having to wait round all day to play her match.

December 2021 - tests positive for Covid and is forced to miss BBC's SPOTY show and therefore give a winner's speech possibly live and in front of hundreds of people on stage.

January 2022 - has blister on main hand so unable to play anywhere near her best tennis.

That's a lot of bad luck at very unfortunate times.
