Something by Peter James? Local boy in the frame? Probably got DEAD in the title. One of the later ones heavily features the Amex I believe. No idea which, tho others will undoubtedly know

Probably his book about the terrorist attack on the Amex that got flasks banned !

I see people are fully respecting the "written after 1990" request :lolol::lolol:

I'm glad someone recommended Alan Furst, as he was my first thought. He's written a large number of books and none of them are duds. Someone also mentioned China Mieville - the City and the City is a terrific read. I'm not wild about Peter James' Grace books - the first few are OK but they get progressively worse.

If you want modern detective stories, Tana French's Dublin books are cracking good stories - ignore the terrible TV version of the first two books.

And now for something completely different. Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall. Absolutely outstanding book.

I've just read the first Shetland and Vera books by Ann Cleeves. Very good. (PS - I very much enjoy Holmes / Marsh / Sayers, and many of those green Penguin books from that era)

I like the Ellie Griffiths Dr Ruth Galloway mysteries. Very well written who done its based in Norfolk. Start with The Crossing Places.

She's lives in Brighton and has a second series of detective stories based around the city, start with the Zig Zag Girl.

Travels in the Scriptorium (Paul Auster)
One of Austers better books after The New York Trilogy.

My Brother (Karin Smirnoff)
Book from a Swedish debutant, massive hit and there is currently a big international tv production planned for it. There are two or three follow ups yet to be translated.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation (Ottessa Moshfeg)
Great new book, dark and entertaining.

I need to give my middle brother our Crimbo list and I'm holding up the process. I'd like to ask him to buy me a book (by tomorrow at the latest). The spec is:

Modern (written after 1990)

Of modern lit, I like the Dragon Tattoo series, Dark Materials, MW Craven.....

So, mysteries, a bit dark, not full of gory violence but intriguing, with a twist, but not absurd.

Of wider/older literature I liked Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes), HP Lovecraft, Graham Greene . . . . Ngaio Marsh....fairly low brow.

I do not like Amis (father or son) Moorcock and anyone who I might regard as knowingly literary.

Cheers! HWT.

I discovered this chap recently and have read a couple of them. Very good IMHO.

If you fancy a bit of light hearted easy reading non fiction any of Tony Hawks books are worth a read. Round Ireland with a Fridge and Playing the Moldovans at Tennis are both crackers IMO.

Have you read the Bernie Gunther novels? They're detective noir, about a Berlin detective in the 30s and 40s. Phillip Kerr was the author (he died relatively recently); first one came out in 1989 so technically outside your limits, mind you.

Because it's not yet a crime in Tory Britain to own more than one book, can I strenuously suggest you invest some personal cash money in this one H? Vaguely in your area of expertise methinks, and reads like a really good thriller. Also a current major court case last time I looked

Many thanks for that. I saw a TV programme about her recently. What an extraordinary delusional psychopath. I have a colleague who has been described by some as 'believing his own lies'. It is quite a gift. He has been awarded an OBE and is now the president of an important research society. I'll put your recommendation o my list
