So Warwickshire need to bat the first session tomorrow and try and smash another 150ish, and then they would have two sessions to bowl out Somerset for below about 250?

If Warwickshire can pull that off they become champions.
If they don't, then Lancashire are champions.

Have I got that about right?

Yep. If Warks win they're champions. Any other result and Lancs are champions.

Warwicks finish tonight on 179/1.
A lead of 157 with 9 wickets remaining.

I guess they will want to score a quick 150 in the morning declaring around lunch setting a target of 320ish.

With Mark Robinson as head coach of Warwickshire I hope the Bears can win it.

Now that Hampshire have f**ked it up, a Warwickshire win will mark a splendid end to an otherwise dreadful season. I'm not convinced they will, sadly - both sides have scored plenty on that wicket already.

Back to Sussex. If I was asked to score the club out of 10 for the overall progress this season I don’t think I could give them any more than Zero, and that’s being kind. Yes, we’ve blooded youngsters (too many) and there have been good individual performances but we’ve thrown the kids to the wolves and they’ve been eaten alive. Why would.any of them stay with us if another offer came along? What have Andrew and Salisbury done?

How would you score the club for progress/promise in 2021?

Am I allowed to score a minus number? The Management's disregard for the red ball competition is a disgrace. As an earlier poster said that whilst we can't compete with the likes of the test ground Counties we have no excuse for getting thrashed by Leics and Derbys. Maybe 1 or 2 of these youngsters will go on and have successful county playing careers but they are just as likely to have had their confidence shot.

I see Prior (again) and Adams are having their say on twitter. Positioning themselves?

Surely Andrew has to go?

Does anyone have any insight into what happened at the members forum?

Not much happened at the forum by all accounts. Prior and Adams are transparently positioning themselves. Interesting times ahead.

I asked a couple of weeks ago and I'll say it again: who should Salisbury have picked for the Leics and Derby game that he didn't? Salt - who hasn't played red ball cricket all season? Jordan - who hasn't played any red ball cricket for a couple of years? Beer - who has hardly played any red ball cricket throughout his career? Garton, Robinson and Archer were all unavailable. So who else was there?

The decision was taken, some years ago, by Andrew and Gillespie to prioritise T20 (and I have no idea who was the main driver behind that, but I suspect it was Dizzy), It was a terrible choice, we've not managed to win anything and it's driven our FC team to the bottom. The decisions to get rid of Nash and Wells were particularly poor but the obsession with T20 has made it worse.

Sadly, unlike in 1997, the members have little clout and can't sack the board. But Adams and Prior's moves are interesting; they certainly seem to be in alliance. Grizz has no great record though, he was swiftly dumped by Surrey, over the lack of discipline at the club (Salisbury was sacked with him BTW).

I agree that it's been a terrible season but I think scoring zero or minus scores is a bit too harsh: there are plenty of bright spots - Haines is the top scorer in the country, Brown finished not far short of 1000 runs, Atkins is really promising (two five-fers and a four-fer in his first four FC matches is a great return), we've seen the youngest player to score a 50 in the history of the CC (and he came within a whisker of a ton too), three players in the England U19 team and we've got a very promising off-spinner who's only 20.

There's hope for the future, so I'd give it 3 out of 10 but we really need to shake up our recruitment because it could get worse.

5.

Firstly, it was always going to be a difficult season. To an extent, you have to put the results to one side, and look at individuals.

Lenham, Ibrahim, Orr, Haines and Carson have come on loads. Carter and Atkins have done pretty well too.
That’s a lot of new talent.
Some of the others have had a go and not proved up to it. Hopefully they’ll be moved on.
The link up with Oxfordshire is clever. There’s more talent coming through.
“Thrown to the wolves and eaten alive “ - that’s your way of putting it. Other Sussex posters claim these young players will be broken by the experience. But Perhaps they’ve had the time of their lives, competing in a high level of cricket. Salisbury says they can’t wait for next season,

T20 ended badly but there were some good moments and we got to the last four.

Why would any of them stay? That’s an easy one. Theyd get game time at Sussex, unlike at other counties.

The jury is out on Salisbury imo - what coach could have done a lot better with that squad? There have been individual successes which is to his credit.he deserves more time to see if his jigsaw can come together.

Andrew - it’s hard to think of his successes, but if he left do you really think someone would come in a magically make it better? There’s a bigger picture for smaller counties and it’s not great…. Whether we get rid of Andrew of not, it will still be tough next year. That all said , I’d get shot of andrew.

As for Adams and prior . I love what Adams did for Sussex but this week he was on Twitter whinging about not being invited to the county ground for a free lunch. Bit of an eye-roller , for me. Prior has been shit stirring about the club in a childish way.
I’m not sure they’re the answer.

My interest in cricket has waned in recent years but I still follow the Sussex results. This season has been an embarrassment apart maybe from reaching the last four of the 20/20. Where have the glory days gone? Lord Ted must be turning in his grave.

They should be good enough to adapt. It isn't that difficult. Salt, Jordan, and Beer can still bat and bowl. Playing Garton purely as a batsman was ludicrous since he can't bat. Wright and Bopara should never have been restricted to white ball cricket only (what do they actually do for most of the season - sit on the beach all day). None of them are over played - if anything they don't play enough these days.

The England call ups were a pest, but throwing a load of kids to the wolves is hopeless. I've played in teams that got thrashed regularly (I was shit as well) and it didn't encourage me to continue playing....

Why would any member want to renew their season ticket next year when they could see a better standard of cricket for free in their local park.

In Jordan's case, it's a question of fitness: would he last four days? Beer's not a FC player, he's been with the club 13 years and has taken 43 wickets (Carson has had one and half seasons and taken 55). The only you could argue who could have played is Salt but I wonder whether he was in the right frame of mind to do so.

I agree entirely about Wright (and to a lesser extent Bopara), that was a crass decision but that was a Gillespie decision, nothing to do with the current management.

Weiss, van zyl, Wright, bopara, Jordan, claydon, meaker, + more. Surely some of these could’ve supported the kids by adding much needed experience at the rough end of the season, even on a match by match contract basis.

Warren, Andrew and Salisbury have a responsibility to field a competitive team. Sadly we were hammered in our last 3 matches against the dregs of the bottom league, all against a backdrop of white ball failure.

As for the treatment of Ben Brown, that deserves another thread.

Does anyone think Tom Haines will have benefitted from being captain this season and will be captain next season?

I don’t see any positives from this season unless it starts another revolution

Weise - preparing for the T20 World Cup
Van Zyl - back in SA
Wright and Bopara - as mentioned, no FC contract. I've no idea of the possibility of match by match basis. They may not want to play FC cricket
Jordan - as mentioned, not fit enough
Claydon and Meaker - I've seen them bowl this season: Atkins and Crowcombe are better, Atkins considerably so.

I don't think Bob Warren has much say on the selection of the teams and Salisbury can only work with what he's got

I’m not saying Warren should pick the team, I’m saying he has responsibilities as Chairman.

Atkins was over bowled and got injured.

There is no way that Sussex should have been fielding last years Bedes U17s (I exaggerate to make my point 😀) routinely in First Class cc matches this year.

Or just say, we’re skint, we need to take a long look at ourselves as to whether we are the right management team to take the club forwards

I agree with much of this.

The quality of young players IS really good in comparison with anything elsewhere or in Sussex past. The excellence of the cricket schools at Bedes and Eastbourne is a real strength (hopefully BACA too in time).
The Oxfordshire link seems excellent and is almost entirely thanks to Keith Greenfield (aka "Grubby"). It is an example of what he is very good at and why he should be retained in a re-adapted or better supported role.
Salisbury and Kirtley seem to have plenty about them as coaches. Obviously impossible to tell properly from the outside but they certainly can't be judged on the results of the redball team. The T20 campaign was successful.
Andrew doesn't seem to have been responsible for anything very good. The wider context in the game obviously makes the job he holds extremely difficult though.
Adams is not the answer to much apart from "Who was a great county batsman/captain and now is a good figurehead to have on board when attempting to influence regime change at Sussex CCC?".
Prior is passionate - with an awesome cricket CV - and might be a reasonably shrewd operator. He could have something good to offer in some sort of Head of Professional Cricket role...?? Who knows?

You are clearly a glass half full person Moshe, and full credit for your positivity.

I’m not so sure about the youngsters. Some of the performances have to be put into context regarding the calibre of opposition. Derby won one match this season. We’ve taken just 34 wickets in our last 4 matches (in bottom league). Middx set all sorts of records against us.

Brown and Haines scored over 2000 runs between them. I suspect no one else was anywhere near.
