Covered in this years fan forum by PB . Summary :- because of rail seats required it would take up more room per person which together with cost of installation and lack of enough interest its a big fat NO
End of thread !

Fair enough. I’ll be honest. What with my being only an occasional visitor to The Amex, I’d really not paid any attention to this issue until I saw it become a theoretical possibility this morning. Even my basic grasp led me to suspect it was a non-starter because of the numbers, as suggested in my original post.

I’m disappointed because I would love to stand at matches again but I completely get why the club won’t take this up and shan’t be spitting my dummy out. In fact, I think I’ll go along tonight.
:)

From what I remember from the survey, fans that weren't bothered either way ( like me ) were lumped in with those against it to create a representation of low fan interest.

Might remember wrong of course

Can you remember how long ago this survey was? From memory at the on here or at the FF it was suggested that only a small number turned up, which probably isn’t surprising if on a week night as an example?

He wasn't quite telling the truth regarding room per person, as rail seating takes exactly the same space as regular seats.

He also assumed people would want cheaper tickets if they were standing, but thats just an assumption.

Yes there is the question of cost, which for the entire northstand would be around £200k. (Assuming the numbers I found online are correct)

What PB ignored was what benefit would be gained in atmosphere? Isn't there a question of marginal gains? There's a reason you stand to sing in a church, so why not at the football?

No chance we will be in, our supporters don't want it, and if they did it would cost the club money both to build it and then in terms of revenue against traditional seats. Glad we're in the 21st century and not trying to move back to the 20th century.

Not forgetting a reduced capacity in any area it’s installed in. The issue will be if clubs without safe standing that witness persistent standing in seated areas face sanction if they don’t crack down on persistent standing.

Absolutely this. From a completely personal point of view l have never seen the appeal anyway.

Two reasons, it would be nothing like standing on the terrace as in the "old days", plus at 65 l wouldn't be able to last the whole game standing up anyway. Give me my nice comfy seat in the West Lower anyday.

Personally I'd like to stand up (or rather, have the option of standing up throughout without being moaned at by stewards or people behind me) because I think it's more fun and I feel more engaged.

It not being anything like an old fashioned terrace is, based on the descriptions from some of the old farts (sorry, erm, more distinguished fans :)) on here, an entirely good thing.

I rarely get to home games anyway (today excluded :ascarf::albion: woo!), so I'm not bothered.

Wonder if we’ll apply for a licence or not. Additional costs to install units that will sell for less

Why will they sell for less when we could go for seats with barriers, so you had an option ?

Let's face it, most of the sell out crowds in the away end stand anyway, and so does a fair proportion of the North Stand.
We will ultimately follow the crowd if everyone else starts and I can see in the future both a large section of the North and South as optional, how that would work I am not sure, but they can figure the logistics, it's not liking putting a man in Croydon.

I wonder what the fines would be once the FA ratify this as well, for clubs who don't install the safe standing options and fans continue to stand, will they hand out more fines or penalties, otherwise what is point in implementing this ?

Just some thoughts, from an idiot.

I'd be up for having a corner of the stadium, capacity no more than 500, of ravenous and drug-fuelled mayhem-hunters, increasingly naked as the game progresses and disappointment and joy magnify and strip attendees. They'd be manoeuvred out at halftime to bathe in bubblesome lager vats, whilst students enter the viewing area and hose down the blood'n'spunk-ridden steps and rails for an extreme and slippery 15 minutes. The 500 have 10 year licenses, but at least death is expected of them per match. One opposition fan is dangled and slowly lowered above them if the madness momentarily depletes, the scent of this hanging vermin sprayed into the burnt-out nostrils of this mangled collective.

Stay local perhaps, probably still a few clubs in the lower divisions in South Yorks where you can still indulge and do that.

There are plenty of clubs down the divisions all over the country where I could go if my sole aim was to stand up while watching football. Most of the games I go to are Brighton away matches, so I'm normally stood up at those anyway

I moved out of Sheffield a couple of weeks ago. I might get around to changing my location at some point, if I get through the entirety of my to-do list.

Which is exactly the point I made earlier; if people like you with a preference to sit (probably 80% of our fans) are included in a survey then the answer will always be no to rail-seating. However, if the questions were:

1. are you interested in standing and singing at matches?, and
2. would you buy a season ticket for a safe standing section of the North Stand?

Then you would establish how many rail seats to install in that section and everyone else can carry on as they are. What we would benefit from is some decent co-ordinated singing from the NS.

Couldn’t we just chip in for a drum, a megaphone, some flags and some black T-shirt’s?

Personally i think the Amex was built as an all seater stadium and that is how it should stay. However if some fans want it then they should pay the price for converting from sitting to safe standing.

A nice city Sheffield, least ways it has been on my away days to Bramall Lane, have never made it to Hillsborough though, doubt l ever will now our clubs are seperated by two divisions.

Some people seem to have a romanticised view of "safe standing" being like a return to the terraces, but its nothing of the sort. You're buying a designated rail seat, with a barrier in front to lean on. You can't just rock up, meet up with all your mates and congregate where you want behind the goal like in the old days - so seriously, whats the point ?

It doesn't increase capacity. It won't be any cheaper for the fans. And it'll cost TB FASANDS to rip out the old seats and install the rails. All for some notional, vague "I want to stand at football" aspiration from a small percentage of fans (which a large section already do in the North anyway).

To be clear, I don't have any objections to it - I sit in the WSU and have no desire or intention to change. I'm just struggling to see the point of it all. And don't give me "atmosphere" - I'm long enough in the tooth to have stood on terrraces all over the country (including at the Goldstone), when its been like a morgue. Its what happens on the pitch that gets the crowd going, not leaning on a barrier in a designated spot.
