• Connor Goldson's Return Should Help Brighton's Defensive Resolve in the Premier League

Albion fans will have been pleased to see Connor Goldson return to the fold last week as the Seagulls took on Fortuna Dusseldorf in a pre-season friendly.

Goldson was sidelined for the second half of the Championship campaign due to the discovery of a heart complaint. The former Shrewsbury man watched on as his team mates clinched promotion to the Premier League. His return to action comes at the perfect time for manager Chris Hughton. Albion are forecast to struggle in the top flight by the bookmakers who have priced them up as second favourites for the drop behind fellow promoted side Huddersfield.

Despite finishing second in the Championship last season, Albion ended the campaign with the joint best defensive record in the division, conceding just 40 goals throughout the campaign. Goldson made his last appearance in the FA Cup against Lincoln City at the end of January with the club crashing out of the competition at the hands of the non-league outfit. From that point Albion went on to keep just six clean sheets in nineteen league fixtures.

Austrian left-back Markus Suttner has joined from Ingolstadt to further strengthen the Albion defence and is the third new addition this summer. He joins Mathew Ryan from Valencia (replacing the outgoing David Stockdale), with the Australian stopper fresh from competing in the Confederations Cup this Summer.

Albion will be aiming to remain solid at the back next season in the top flight as they bid to survive that oh-so-difficult first season of Premier League football. We have been priced up at 4/6 to avoid an immediate return to the second tier. Attacking firepower could be an issue, with Sam Baldock, Glenn Murray, and Tomer Hemed being joined by Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown. Murray is as big as 200/1 to finish as top goalscorer in the division; indicating that defence could be Albion's biggest asset.

Brighton will be aiming to spring a surprise on the opening day of the season when they face Manchester City at the Amex. The game has been moved to a 5:30pm kick off for television coverage and the hosts have been priced up at around 8/1 to get off to a winning start when hosting Pep Guardiola's side. The Citizens are likely to be included in many punters' accumulators on the opening day of the Premier League season with sport betting tips and bonuses available at bookiesoffers.co.uk throughout the campaign. However, for Brighton fans, a free bet from one of the major bookmakers might be the better option for the season opener.

Goldson will be looking forward to a full return to first team league action but is likely to have to bide his time with Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy looking set to continue last season's impressive partnership. The club have friendlies lined up against Norwich, Girona, and Atletico Madrid as the squad continue to work on their fitness and form ahead of the new campaign.

Connor Goldson will be looking to use these games to prove his worth to Chris Hughton and force himself into the Albion's Premier League squad. It may be the case, however, that he will be loaned out to further continue his rehabilitation and to get the match minutes he needs.

Erm, sorry to hijack this thread but any chance I/any mods could post The Blue and White 'Un on here or Read the Albion? Gonna try to make it a weekly thing, god knows if it will be as I managed a three-year gap before the most recent one: http://attheendofthedaydes.blogspot....21st-2017.html
