• ...and number 17 was Stephen Ward!

    12 Craig Mackail-Smith
    13 David Stockdale
    14 Inigo Calderon
    15 Adam Chicksen
    16 Casper Ankergren
    18 Jake Forster-Caskey

There was a big number 17 sized hole when the Albionís squad numbers were announced and that is to be filled, at long, long last, by Republic of Ireland international Stephen Ward who excelled on the left side of Albionís miserly defence last season.

    Ward: cures a problem

With both Jez Moxey and Tony Bloom playing hardball on the deal, itís the one that has dragged on all Summer as Ward has been largely outcast to the Wolvesí leper colony with Jamie OíHara and Kevin Doyle, blighted by their involvement in the double relegation and a toxic dressing room.

Ward seems an unassuming character and itís hard to believe he was a chief architect in Wolves falling from grace, perhaps being more guilty by association. Regardless, Wolves loss should be Albionís gain and in returning to the Amex it means the club won't have lost all three of the highest rated players in the 2013-14 player of the season awards. Ward came in second, to the now departed Matthew Upson, pushing Thomas Kuszczak into third place.

His return, on an expected three year deal, will relieve Sami Hyypia of one headache he has been facing with Adam Chicksen still not quite ready for a full Championship season, meaning Inigo Calderon switched from right to left in the opening day defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

With Aaron Hughes seemingly a very capable replacement for Matthew Upson, Seagulls fans will be hoping the Albion now have the components in place to ensure that new arrival David Stockdale is not picking the ball out of the back of the net too often this season.

Worries still exist at the other end of the pitch however, and further arrivals are expected who can both create chances and convert them. Ward will be part of Abionís attacking options too, with Hyypia likely to ask him to play in an advanced role when in possession, and his eye for goal will also be welcomed.

with all this going on selling players buying players, this is the one I personally wanted, he is the ultimate professional and I can feel Sami's relief from here.
back four sorted now we need a centre forward with 20+ goals up his sleeve and someone in midfield to supply him.

Hallelujah. We have a more than capable defence, presuming there are no hiccups.

It will be a pleasure watching Stephen again this season.

I am still hoping that Dunk plays a lot of games in the centre.

When I read this I genuinely believed he'd signed on the dotted - but assumed the Club were waiting to make some big announcement. Hopes built up and dashed.
