    Over the course of the last six months or so, Albion number nine Sam Baldock has gone from strength to strength, adding goals to his intelligent and selfless running - finally winning over a large percentage of his erstwhile detractors in the process.

    Whilst his movement and work-rate have always been fully appreciated by his manager and team-mates (his strike partners especially), some of the fan base were less prepared to see past a modest contribution to the ‘Goals Scored’ column. “What does he even DO?” they would ask? – refusing to accept the value of the aforementioned attributes = goals win games, not ‘clever movement’.

    Well, that was disappointing.

    From a SkySports perspective, though, it was a brilliant, pulsating game – loads of goal-mouth action – penalty shouts to chew over – celebrity fans to spot – quality saves – a bizarre fluke goal – a dramatic late winner – all making for an apparently massive viewing audience, three times the usual level for a Championship game.

    Back to the Amex, off the back of what felt a HUGE win in a tricky fixture at Barnsley – an unchanged Albion ran out to a boisterous crowd, lubricated by the early evening kick-off, and buoyed by the afternoon’s Championship results – both Newcastle and Huddersfield dropping points – the Toon, in what looked a home banker.

    Rolling up to the Amex to late news that Baldock and Bruno were out was far from the reassurance required, on an already nervy night. What is it with Wednesday that we are seemingly never able to put a full strength side out against them?

    In the 'olden days' (basically before this season) if Brighton were unbeaten in MONTHS, playing at home to a team losing week on week, with all and sundry predicting a routine home win, the battle-weary Albion faithful knew exactly what to expect. Things are different right now. Never, in the 33 seasons I've been religiously rolling up, have the words 'routine', 'home' and 'win' shared a sentence with regularity, except perhaps in the Scunthorpe Observer or the Bury Examiner, dissecting our away travails.

    Work, work, work.

    Too much work, unfortunately = no match report on the excellent win over Barnsley, nor of the ultimately frustrating draw against Preston. The frankly unprofessional finale to that game, left this subsequent home game, feeling like a 'must win' - much as I hate that term - if the Albion were to hold their place in the emerging breakaway pack.

    Difficult to know what to expect from the visitors - a side who followed a 0-4 defeat at home to Barnsley, with a 2-0 win away at Newcastle - but a decent game in prospect, no doubt. A decent crowd there to see     ...

    First apologies for the lack of a Brentford report. I could (honestly) point to some crazy work pressures as the sole reason, but in truth, you can add me to the long list of those of a blue and white persuasion, who failed to put the effort in. Horrible performance, completely lacking in intensity or desire. Take nothing away from the Bees though, who thoroughly deserved their victory - and especially Scott Hogan, who looked mightily impressive - if not surely, the Sergio Aguero equal that we made him look.
