It was Brighton’s third successive home victory without conceding a goal, and it put Chris Cattlin’s side in fourth place. The win was clinched with Steve Penney’s marvelous second-half blockbuster from the edge of the box that gave future England keeper David Seaman no chance.
The return fixture at St Andrews in March 1985 ended all square with the Seagulls’ Frank Worthington scoring against one of his old sides. In the end, Brighton finished sixth, just missing out on promotion back to the top flight by just three points.

5.Gary O’Reilly- Went on to score for Crystal Palace in the 1990 FA Cup Final.
6.Graham Pearce- Made 24 league appearances for Brighton in 1984/85. This was a rare outing in the centre of defence.
7.Danny Wilson- Industrious midfielder who formed a great partnership with Case, as well as contributing five league goals.
8.Jimmy Case- A real favourite at the Goldstone. Surprisingly sold to Southampton in March 1985.
9.Mick Ferguson- Former Birmingham striker who joined the Seagulls in the previous month as part of the deal that took Mark Jones in the opposite direction.
10.Terry Connor- His penetrating run down the left created the chance for Jacobs to open the scoring.
11.Steve Penney- His outstanding shot from the edge of the area sent the local fans home very happy.
Birmingham City
1.David Seaman- Future England goalkeeper with QPR and Arsenal. Had an impossible job trying to stop either of the Albion goals.
2.Mark Jones- Played just nine matches for the Seagulls before moving to the Blues in September 1984.
3.Brian Roberts- Defender who joined Birmingham in 1984 for £10,000 from Coventry using proceeds from a fans’ ‘Buy a Player’ fund.
4.Billy Wright- Former Everton centre-back. Was ever-present as captain in the Blues side that clinched the runners-up spot at the end of the campaign.
5.Ken Armstrong- Appeared in the Brighton team photo for 1984/85, but did not ever play for the Seagulls as negotiations broke down. Signed for Birmingham instead.
6.Gerry Daly- A target for the Seagulls in 1979/80, when Alan Mullery tried to arrange a swop involving Peter Ward.
7.Jim Hagan- Joined Birmingham in 1982 and became a regular over the next five years.
8.Wayne Clarke- Top scorer with 17 league goals for the Blues in 1984/85. Later a league champion with Everton in 1987.
9.Mick Harford- Tough centre-forward who later made his name in Luton Town’s 1988 League Cup winning team.
10.Des Bremner- Rated by boss Rob Saunders as his most consistent player in the championship winning campaign of 1980/81 when they were both together at Aston Villa.
11.Tony Rees- A forward who played in all four divisions as well as winning a Welsh cap. Scored twice in 1984/85.
12.Martin Kuhl (for Rees)- Helped Portsmouth to the FA Cup Semi-Final in 1992, but was one of three players to miss a penalty in the replay shootout against Liverpool.
