Can't believe this is as hard as it is but does anyone know where you can buy an office/gaming chair with the option to try it first? I'm sure there are dedicated shops but I am after somewhere mainstream that I can go on a weekend and try before I buy. With the demise of Staples, I'm not sure where else there is short of a day trip to Ikea. A quick search suggests Dunelm Mill sell them but don't know if that is online only. Tried PC World yesterday and they don't do them. Seems to be online only which for something that really needs trying first is a bit daft. Not looking for top of the range but also want to stop the buy cheap/buy often pattern I have done online so happy to go to medium price range if I can try first

I was going to mention Staples, that's where l obtained mine a few years ago just before they closed their doors for the final time, (not much use to you now l know).

The few they had remaining in stock they had made up ready for customers to try, l sat on them all, decided on the one l am currently sitting on as l type, put it into the back of my car, and drove home with it.

There used to be a few different hign street stockists, but as you say, everything seems to be based on online sales now.

Not sure how close you are, but maybe give ODM a try? I think they now have a large showroom at the Knoll Business Centre.

I went there last year, they have a decent selection but were ridiculously expensive, mostly £250+ for some pretty bang-average chairs. I ended up going on Amazon and taking a punt on this one

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07L5LVH8S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

and I love it. I'm sure it was £135 when I got it, so it seems to have gone up a bit. But its perfect, with the optional lumbar support cushion as well.

Yeah, they're not the cheapest, but I guess it might be worth going there to try out a few and then look online for a cheaper deal.

I'm always tempted by recommendations but they can be such a personal taste thing

I reckon they probably offer discounts to companies bulk-buying from them, but if you're just buying one for yourself then they do seem to come at a premium. The chair I bought online turned out to be far better than any of the ones I saw at ODM, and for about half the price.

Yeah I get that. I never (or very rarely) buy shoes or clothes online for much the same reason. What you order and what you end up with aren't always one and the same!

A few years ago I purchased one from The Range In Worthing. Although flat packed for purchase there were assembled chairs to try. I haven't visited recently so do not know what is available at present. They have a branch in Newhaven plus others in Sussex.

I did wonder about The Range - might pop there later

Always had Herman Miller at work. Couldn't see what all the fuss was about, other than the price tag.

I thought the same until I got all the adjustments to my liking, and they arent that costly refurbished, not for something that's going to save your back.

I bought a second hand Herman Miller chair in 2009 (as lots of financial companies were closing there was a glut of them on eBay).

I’ve sat in it every day for hours on end and it still looks new.

One of my better investments.

We have Humanscale brand chairs at work and they're the equal of Herman Miller for comfort. I think however they're also equally costly new - not sure on s/h prices.
