Using v^2 = u^2 + 2 as, he would've been doing an absolute maximum of 46 mph when he hit the beach, probably a lot less due to wind resistance etc. So perhaps not as amazing as it sounds though crazy nonetheless. Having hit a motorway crash barrier at 70 mph I can see how it's possible.
