Jesus Christ. This really turned my stomach. Psychiatry at it's best.

There are about 2,000 people with learning disabilities or autism detained in specialist hospitals across England and a BBC investigation revealed 100 of them, including Mr Hickmott, have been held for longer than 20 years.

Absolutely horrendous story :(

The lack of funding for supporting people with mental health issues (and apparently, autism) in this country is awful

And people ask me, given that I'm 'a bit' on the spectrum, why I don't seek 'help'. I did actually try to get myself some support at work, but it was a waste of time. I continue to have to put up with people who think it's OK to dig me out in public if I say something a bit too 'florid' for them at a meeting. Yesterday we had spent 15 minutes pussyfooting around an academic appeal that was bollocks from start to finish, but moved to dismiss it only after I described the appeal (not the student) as 'idiotic'. Succinct, I though. Instead I was told that 'even though this meeting isn't being recorded and that what you said won't be minuted, it is wrong to make pejorative comments about students'. Far cough. And someone else said essentially that what I said was correct but the way I said it (etc. etc.). Far cough. After I spent an hour fuming about this. Sadly I can't put the arse on ignore. And that is how my life is. Trivial first world problems perhaps, compared with the poor sod in the BBC report. In the wider context, mental health provision is absolutely crap in the UK unless you are lucky enough to find an insightful consultant, and even then unless you become a danger to yourself and/or others, you are more likely to be fobbed off than helped.
