I picked up a copy of the Sunday Sun yesterday while sitting in a coffee shop.

What a load of complete crap!

First I tried the sports section. Written for ten year olds. Absolutely nothing of interest ... the first time I have said that about the sports section of any newspaper.

Next I thought I'd give the main section a go. Awful, awful, awful. I gave up after six pages.

What really concerns me is that people in this country (and quite a few of them I believe) actually pay for this rag, and then probably read it. Well, I say "read it", but I would doubt many of them have the reading skills of anything more than a five year old, so they probably just look at the pictures.

What concerns me is that there are that many ignorant, half-educated, dumb individuals in this country.

I am not suggesting that everyone should read The Times (it would be a better country if they did), but at least please read something written with a modicum of intelligence. I honestly did not have high hopes of a "riveting read" when I picked it up, but I did not expect such absolute drivel.

Now, about this world of peace and harmony that you are bringing forth. What happened?

So it's exactly like The Sun except it's published on a Sunday, I would expect nothing else.

The Sun (under whatever guise) wields an enormous amount of power, because it's perused by the unthinking masses. It got Maggie in and it got Maggie out and it got Blair in. Every time it changes political allegiance, so do those unthinking masses. And I always remember, that on the Friday before Hungerford, The Sun had a double-page spread headlined: Top Twenty Serial Killers. Michael Ryan's last words were: How many did I get?

I agree it got Maggie and Blair in but I'm pretty sure it was the Tory party turning in on itself that got Maggie out.

Have a read of the Express or the Mail - equally bland and unintelligent !

You are right that The Sun wields an enormous amount of power, or at least in its heyday. However, I remember reading that internal research showed that Sun readers were very positive towards Tony Blair, and in a circulation battle with the Daily Mirror, this influenced its decision to switch to New Labour, alongside the desire to not back an election loser.

Are you surprised at all ? Never seen a copy of the Sunday Sun but if it's anything like the weekday Sun it's just utter garbage, for people who want to put something in front of their eyes without anything thinking. It's for lazy people and idiots. As for the times, it's actually not much better, just in a different font and less pictures of celebs.

Sent my son up to the paper shop yesterday afternoon to buy a Observer, he called to say "they only have the sun, mail or Express" "dont bother" was my answer!!

I may be getting old and grumpy, but all the news on telly and in the papers has been dumbed (sp?) down to suit the sort of media obssesed z list celeb culture we seem to have become.

In the last 3 years I can count the amount of newspapers I've bought on one hand. I just don't see the point. I get all of the news I need from the internet.

I don't buy many, but you can't beat sitting down with a huge wedge of papers and supplements in a nice comfortable chair with a cup of tea, and perhaps a bacon roll. Papers don't give a shit about butter/jam/sauce stains, or tea/OJ spills either. Sitting at a computer or iPad is fine, but I for one still enjoy the hardcopy experience when I get the chance! (which is not often with 3 kids!!)

There was a column in the last match programme by Paul Jiggins, who writes in the Sun as well, saying that The Sun is one of those things which everyone denies. "I don't buy the Sun!". But they have a daily circulation of around 4 million copies, so someone is!

I read it every couple of weeks on a sunday when I go to my dads for a spot of dinner, and I quite like reading it. It is pretty simplistic, and you shouldn't expert any ground breaking analysis or anything like it. But it's an easy read, and I quite like the content. It's enough to keep me engaged, which probably says a lot about my level of intelligence. :jester:

T'internet is mostly headlines. Newspapers give you detail and analysis.
