To be honest it's all about the starters:
sheekh kebab (affectionately known as the "cat poo")
onion bhajis
prawn puree
samosa
dosas
chicken and lamb tikka
popadoms
lots of dips

So many order a curry without the above and they're missing out.

Very often just order a load of starters and sides (Shami Kebab my favourite) from our local takeaway along with Poppadoms and Naan and then break out our pickles and chutneys etc. at home.

They always seem mystified that I don't go on to order any Mains but we simply wouldn't get around to them!

Peshwar Naan is essential for me and Mrs V. Been doing my own Lime Pickle for the last 9 months and that too, has become essential now,

Lamb bhuna with white rice, Bombay potato and a few poppadoms.

(All these food threads are making me very hungry after 72 hours with no food!)

Any fans of Motar Paneer.....cheesy peas? love em and always order as a side.

To be honest, even after a skinful, I find a Chicken tikka dhansak, mushroom rice and motar paneer is all I can eat.

It’s all about the home made from my MIL and my wife’s ‘aunties’.

They are like nothing you’ve ever tried in a restaurant - even their bhajis and tandoori chicken kick ass.

One of her aunties always makes me a massive supply of her special chicken whenever she drops round. So succulent and as hot as her dry spice mix is you can taste every single spice and the heat builds nicely with each mouthful.

Even the simplest things like kachumber are so different in each household but if you ever get a takeaway cuzza and they’ve forgotten that lovely bag of salad here’s a really easy recipe to make your own:

One small red onion - very thinly sliced or diced, then wash in warm water, leave to dry.

Flavoursome small plum tomatoes halved - Tesco sugar drops work well.

Half a Cucumber, split down the middle, peeled and de-seeded then finely sliced and washed

Fresh coriander - a handful roughly chopped.

One carrot, peeled, washed and grated

Add to a bowl the following:

Table salt - 1 teaspoon
Ground cumin - preferably seeds that have been roasted but the Schwartz jar will do - half a teaspoon, or to taste
Half a lemon, juiced

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl and leave out of the fridge for at least ten minutes for flavours to infuse.

Sometimes it’s the simplest things.

What are the "must have's", mine are:

Poppadoms with all the dips, especially Lime Pickle
Will often vary the main and side (Fav is Chicken Madras and Bombay Aloo)
Fried Rice is a must, as is an extra Garlic Naan

An EXTRA garlic naan? Does that mean you have two?

but my must have side is a cheese naan. If it is not cheesy enough I'm not happy. Don't just bring out a plain naan that has had a conversation with Mr Cheese, make the thing properly in the first place.

The Anaz, in the Valley does a cheese and chilli naan which is absolutely fantastic. I suspect no such naan has been served in India ever, but I don't care.

Popadoms + Dibs
Onionbhaji side
Curry of preference + rice of preference

Everything else optional. I go Naan-less as it fills you up too much. It’s the future!

They play the spices down here. My gf loves chicken madras in Prague. She ordered it in Brighton. After first mouthfull she was punching me.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Curry of choice - vary according to fancy but nothing too hot as I like to be able to taste what I eat
Peshawar nan
Popadoms
Pickles
Veg side dish - one or two of sag, aubergine, okra, chickpea
Cobra or Kingfisher as available.

Or a vegetable thali which covers both main and side dishes.

And a long lie down to digest it all afterwards.
